2008 Epping Forest District Council Election
Elections to Epping Forest Council were held on 1 May 2008. One third of the council was up for election and the council remained in Conservative control. This election saw the largest Green competition. The Chigwell Residents Association's sole councillor, John Knapman, defected to join the Conservatives and won his seat of Chigwell Village. The Loughton Residents Association gained a seat, whilst the BNP lost almost half its representation, despite reaching a record high vote share in the district. One-third of council up for election. 2007 Epping Forest District Council Election
Elections to Epping Forest Council were held on 3 May 2007. One third of the council was up for election and the Conservative party regained overall control of the council, thanks initially to a by-election in Grange Hill in December 2006, and then following gains at this election. The British National Party retained all its representation on the council with 6 seats, and marginally increased its vote share. The remaining Labour councillor, Peter Gode of Shelley retained his seat, albeit with a significantly reduced majority. The Conservatives, following gains from the Liberal Democrats regained control of the council having last had control in 1994. One Independent lost their seat to the Conservatives, leaving two remaining on the council. This election saw the Epping Community Action Group come third in both Epping wards. Epping Forest is a local government district in Essex, England. Situated in the west of the county, bordering northeastern Greater London, it is named after, and contains a large part of, Epping Forest. The district, though wholly within the county of Essex, is partly contiguous with Greater London to the south and southwest, and the area around Buckhurst Hill, Chigwell, Waltham Abbey and Loughton is statistically part of the Greater London Built-up Area and forms part of the Ilford (IG) postcode area (except for Waltham Abbey, which forms part of the Enfield (EN) postcode area and Sewardstone, which forms part of the Eastern (E) postcode area). Loughton Residents Association is a residents association and local political party formed (as the Central Loughton Residents' Association) in 1981, and based in Loughton, Essex, United Kingdom. LRA has always sought to influence events by putting up candidates for public office. The first such councillor to be elected was Howard Kleyn, elected to Essex County Council in May, 1981. British National Party
The British National Party (BNP) is a far-right, fascist political party in the United Kingdom. It is headquartered in Wigton, Cumbria, and its leader is Adam Walker. A minor party, it has no elected representatives at any level of UK government. Founded in 1982, the party reached its greatest level of success in the 2000s, when it had over fifty seats in local government, one seat on the London Assembly, and two Members of the European Parliament. Taking its name from that of a defunct 1960s far-right party, the BNP was created by John Tyndall and other former members of the fascist National Front (NF). Robin Tilbrook
Robin C. W. Tilbrook (born 1958) is an English solicitor and political leader who chairs the English Democrats, a political party he founded. It advocates a devolved English Parliament, having previously advocated English independence from the United Kingdom. Early life Tilbrook was born in Kuala Lumpur, Federation of Malaya, in 1958. He was educated at Wellington College, Berkshire, gained a BA (Hons) in politics and economics from the University of Kent at Canterbury, and then studied at The College of Law, Chester. He was a Coldstream Guardsman and has worked in a factory, in junior management, and as a teacher at primary and secondary level. By 2003, he was a solicitor and a partner in the firm of Tilbrooks in Ongar, Essex. Chris Pond (politician)
Christopher Charles "Chris" Pond is a historian, librarian, and politician, was born in 1949 in Walthamstow, Essex (now part of the London Borough of Waltham Forest), and grew up in Chingford, moving to Loughton, Essex in 1981. Early life He attended Sir George Monoux Grammar School and Queens' College, Cambridge. His PhD (faculty of geography and geology) was obtained in 1981 under Sir Clifford Darby. Latterly an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, he was Head of Reference Services at the House of Commons Library, secretary and then chairman of the FDA House of Commons branch, and then for 15 years President of the Trade Union Side, House of Commons. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2002. Officers of the House of Commons serve with complete political impartiality, and are generally debarred from seeking elected office, but Pond, as an independent, was permitted to stand whilst an officer of the House. Epping Forest District Council Elections
The district of Epping Forest is in the county of Essex in England. It was created on 1 April 1974, following the merger of Epping Urban District, Chigwell Urban District, Waltham Holy Cross Urban District, and part of Epping and Ongar Rural District. Until 2002, Epping Forest District Council was represented by 59 councillors. In 2002 the ward boundaries were reorganised, resulting in the loss of one council seat, and since then the district has had 58 councillors representing 32 wards. Each ward is represented by one, two or three councillors, depending on the ward's population, so that each councillor represents a roughly equal proportion of the district's electorate. Councillors serve for a four-year term. They are elected on a "cycle of thirds", i.e. one third of the Council is elected each year, followed by one year without election. 2008 English Local Elections
The 2008 United Kingdom local elections were held on 1 May 2008. These elections took place in 137 English Local Authorities and all Welsh Councils. There were also extraordinary elections held for four of the new unitary authorities being created, in Northumberland, County Durham and Cheshire (two councils – Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester). Scheduled elections for Penwith in Cornwall, Shrewsbury and Atcham in Shropshire, Bedford and South Bedfordshire in Bedfordshire and five district councils in Cheshire were cancelled, due to the up-coming unitary authorities being established in those counties. The Labour Party finished in 3rd place by vote share, trailing the Conservatives by 20%, the largest such margin ever between the two main parties.
