The 2008 Australia Day Honours are appointments to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by Australian citizens. Australian Honours System
The Australian honours and awards system refers to all Order (distinction), orders, decorations, and medals, as instituted by letters patent from the Monarchy of Australia, Monarch of Australia and countersigned by the Australian prime minister at the time, that have been progressively introduced since 14 February 1975. The Australian honours and awards system excludes all state and local government, and private, issued awards and medals (although a few can be recognised in the Australian Honours Order of Wearing, order of wearing, like those in the Order of Saint John (chartered 1888), Order of St John). Lisa Curry
Lisa Gaye Curry AO MBE (born 15 May 1962), also known by her married name Lisa Curry-Kenny, is an Australian former competition swimmer. Curry won seven gold, two silver and one bronze Commonwealth Games medals, and is the only Australian swimmer to have held Commonwealth and Australian records in every stroke except backstroke. Curry was the chair of the National Australia Day Council from 2000 to 2008. Ann Galbally
Ann Elizabeth Galbally (born 1945) is an Australian art historian and academic. Education and career Galbally was born in Victoria in 1945, daughter of Sheila Marie (née Kenny) and Labor Party politician, John William Galbally. She graduated from the University of Melbourne with BA Hons (English and Fine Arts) in 1966, an MA in 1970 and a PhD in 1975. In the 1970s she was an art critic for ''The Age'' newspaper. Patrick "Pat" Comben Member of the Order of Australia, AM (born 3 May 1950) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Weymouth, Dorset, Weymouth in Dorset and was raised on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, attending the Portland Secondary Modern School. Lesley Veronica Campbell is an Australian endocrinologist and Professor of Medicine with a special interest in clinical diabetes, appetite and metabolism. Louise Adler (born 1954) is a prominent figure in Australian publishing, known for being CEO of Melbourne University Publishing (MUP) since 2003. Major General Mark Andrew Kelly, (born 31 October 1956) is a former senior officer in the Australian Army. Major General Michael Simon Hindmarsh (born 1956) is an Australian military officer, who holds a senior position within the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, commanding its elite force known as the Presidential Guard. Susan Kathleen Milliken is an Australian film producer and author. Career Milliken has made a number of films with director Bruce Beresford. She chaired the Australian Film Commission from 1994 to 1997. Brian Howe (politician)
Brian Leslie Howe AO (born 28 January 1936) is a retired Australian politician and Uniting Church minister. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and deputy leader of the Labor Party from 1991 to 1995, under Bob Hawke and Paul Keating. He was a government minister continuously from 1983 to 1996, and a member of the House of Representatives from 1977 to 1996, representing the Division of Batman in Victoria. Ross James Homel (born 1950 or 1951) is an Australian criminologist. Career He is best known for his extensive research where he theoretically analyses crime and applies scientific methods to develop and implement prevention and intervention strategies.
