Brian Howe (politician)
Brian Leslie Howe AO (born 28 January 1936) is a retired Australian politician and Uniting Church minister. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and deputy leader of the Labor Party from 1991 to 1995, under Bob Hawke and Paul Keating. He was a government minister continuously from 1983 to 1996, and a member of the House of Representatives from 1977 to 1996, representing the Division of Batman in Victoria. Early life Howe was born in Melbourne. He grew up in the suburb of Malvern and attended Melbourne High School, going on to complete a Bachelor of Arts and a diploma in criminology at the University of Melbourne. He later moved to the United States to study at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. Howe was the minister at a Methodist church in Fitzroy from 1961 to 1969, while lecturing part-time in sociology. He remains an ordained Uniting Church minister. Neal Blewett
Neal Blewett, AC (born 24 October 1933) is an Australian Labor Party politician and diplomat. He was the Member of the House of Representatives for Bonython from 1977 to 1994. He served in both the Hawke and Keating Governments, notably in the former as Minister for Health from 1983 to 1991, during which time he oversaw the Government's reaction to HIV/AIDS. After retiring from Parliament in 1994, he was appointed High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, a role he held until 1998. Renate Thelma Howe (born 1939) is an Australian academic and historian. Her research and writing focuses on Australian social, urban and religious history. Howe was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1939. She was educated at East Kew State School and University High School, matriculating in 1956. Her tertiary education included a BA from the University of Melbourne and further studies at University of Chicago. Martin John Ferguson (born 12 December 1953) is an Australian former Labor Party politician who was the Member of the House of Representatives for Batman from 1996 to 2013. Horrie Garrick
Horace James Garrick (26 August 1918 – 6 April 1982) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1969 to 1977, representing the electorate of Batman. Garrick was born in Melbourne and educated at Hawthorn West Central School and Swinburne Technical College. He became a professional athlete and was at one stage state quarter-mile champion, before becoming a mechanical engineering draftsman and establishing his own manufacturing business. The Division of Batman was an Australian Electoral Division in the state of Victoria. It took its name from John Batman, one of the founders of the city of Melbourne.
