2007 Southern Sting Season
The 2007 Southern Sting season saw the Southern Sting netball team compete in the 2007 National Bank Cup league season. With a team coached by Robyn Broughton, captained by Jenny Ferguson and featuring Liana Barrett-Chase, Daneka Wipiiti, Megan Hutton and Donna Wilkins, Sting finished the season as champions. In the minor semi-final, Sting lost 39–47 to Northern Force and in the major semi-final, they defeated Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic 48–46. In the grand final, Sting defeated Force 50–49 as they won their seventh Coca-Cola Cup/National Bank Cup title. The grand final was Robyn Broughton's 100th match in charge of Sting. Robyn Broughton
Robyn Denise Broughton (née Quirk) is a New Zealand netball coach. Broughton coached the Southern Sting from 1998 to 2007 during the National Bank Cup, winning seven titles in ten years. She was also an assistant coach for the New Zealand national netball team from 2000 to 2002, and is currently a national selector. From 2012 to 2015, Broughton coached the Central Pulse in the ANZ Championship, after four years with the Southern Steel and later coached the Hertfordshire Mavericks in the Netball Superleague. Domestic netball The National Bank Cup (NBC) started in 1998 as New Zealand's first franchise-based netball competition. Broughton was appointed head coach of the Invercargill-based Southern Sting, and remained with the franchise throughout the competition's ten-year run. Lesley Rumball
Lesley Marie Rumball (née Nicol, born 9 May 1973) is a former New Zealand netball player. Rumball played with the New Zealand national netball team, the Silver Ferns, from 1993 to 2005. She represented New Zealand in 109 tests to become the second most capped player in Silver Ferns history behind Irene van Dyk. Rumball played as a midcourt defender during her top-level netball career, before her retirement in 2006. Silver Ferns career Rumball debuted for the national team, the Silver Ferns, in 1993. Cathrine Tuivaiti (née Latu; born 25 October 1986 in West Auckland, New Zealand) is a New Zealand netball player of Tongan, Samoan, and Māori descent. Career Early career Cathrine Tuivaiti was a member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools and New Zealand U21 teams, and debuted in the National Bank Cup with the Northern Force in 2005. She continued with the team for a further two years, and remained in Auckland with the start of the ANZ Championship in 2008, playing for the new Northern Mystics franchise. Christchurch Arena is an indoor arena in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is located in the suburb of Addington. It has gone through a series of name changes, the most recent of which prior to its current name having been Horncastle Arena. Description The arena is New Zealand's second-largest indoor arena with a maximum capacity of 8,888 (depending on event type), it was the largest until the construction of Auckland's Vector Arena in 2007. Trusts Stadium
The Trusts Arena is an indoor arena located in Henderson, Auckland, New Zealand. It is a multi-purpose stadium that primarily holds sports events and music concerts. The Arena was opened by then Prime Minister of New Zealand Helen Clark on 11 September 2004. It holds 4,901 people. Adjacent to the stadium is an outdoor athletics facility known as the Douglas Track and Field, which has a capacity of 3,000 people. Edgar Centre
The Edgar Centre is a large multi-purpose indoor sports venue in South Dunedin, New Zealand, on the shore of Otago Harbour close to Andersons Bay Inlet. It is the home venue of the Otago Nuggets basketball team, and an alternate venue for the Southern Steel netball team. The centre also hosts a wide variety of other sports events and community events such as auctions and fairs, and is owned by the Dunedin City Council. The Otago Rebels was a New Zealand netball team which represented Otago in the National Bank Cup. Otago Rebels were the first team to win the inaugural (what was then known as) Coca-Cola Cup. In 2008, the Rebels were merged with Southern Sting to compete as the Southern Steel in the trans-tasman ANZ Championship. Wendy Telfer
Wendy Frew (née Telfer; born 15 October 1984 in Invercargill, New Zealand) is a New Zealand netball player. Frew was a previous member of the champion Southern Sting in the National Bank Cup from 2002 until 2007. With the start of the ANZ Championship in 2008, she remained in Southland playing for the new Southern Steel franchise. 2018 will be Frew's fifth season as captain and her 16th representing the southern franchise, including its predecessor the Sting.
