2006–07 Iraqi Premier League
The 2006–07 Iraqi Premier League kicked off on December 22, 2006 and finished on July 6, 2007. Erbil were crowned champions for the first time in their history, defeating Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya 1–0 in the final, hosted at the Franso Hariri Stadium, Erbil's home ground. Iraqi Premier League
The Iraqi Premier League ( ar, الدوري العراقي الممتاز) is the top level of the Iraqi football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA) and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Iraq Division One. The league was formed by the IFA in 1974 as the Iraqi National Clubs First Division, the first nationwide league of clubs in Iraq. The current format sees 20 teams playing 38 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away), totalling 380 matches in the season. Of the 80 teams to have competed since the inception of the league in 1974, eleven have won the title. Al-Zawraa are the most successful club with 14 titles, followed by Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Talaba and Al-Shorta, who together contest the Baghdad derbies. Al-Naft
Al Naft Sport Club ( ar, نادي النفط الرياضي, lit=''Oil SC'') is an Iraqi professional sports club based in the Adhamiyah District, East Districts of the Tigris River, Baghdad. Their football team plays in the highest division in Iraq which is the Iraqi Premier League, which they have never been relegated from. History Al-Naft Sports Club was established in 1979 by the Ministry of Oil, and was officially registered in the Ministry of Youth and Sports in 1982. In the 1985 season the team played in the Iraqi Premier League for the first time, and finished in the penultimate position that season, and have remained in the Premier League since then. Al-Zawraa
Al-Zawraa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الزوراء الرياضي) is an Iraqi sports club based in Utayfia, Karkh District (near Tigris River), Baghdad. Their football team compete in the Iraqi Premier League, the top-flight of Iraqi football. Al-Zawraa are the most decorated club in Iraq having won 14 Premier League titles, 16 Iraq FA Cups and 5 Iraqi Super Cups, all national records. Al-Zawraa also won the Iraqi Elite Cup a joint-record 3 times. Al-Zawraa have won the domestic double a record eight times and became only the second Iraqi team to win the domestic quadruple in the 1999–2000 season. Al Ramadi Sport Club ( ar, نادي الرمادي), is an Iraqi football club based in Ramadi, in Anbar province, that plays in Iraq Division one. History Al-Ramadi Club played in the Iraqi Premier League. Baghdad Derbies
The Baghdad derbies are a series of derby matches between four Baghdad-based football clubs: Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Shorta, Al-Talaba and Al-Zawraa, collectively known as the 'Popular Teams'. They are the four most successful teams in the history of Iraqi football, and league games between the clubs are played at the neutral venue of Al-Shaab Stadium to accommodate more spectators. The match between Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya and Al-Zawraa is often referred to as the Iraqi El Clásico. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya were the first to be founded in 1931, and Montakhab Al-Shorta were founded in 1932, with these two sides developing a strong rivalry during the Iraq Central FA League era. It has teams in 17 different sports, more than any other Iraqi club, and the best known section of the club is the football team, whose origins date back to 1932. In 1974, following the Iraq Football Association's decision to implement a clubs-only policy for domestic competitions, Al-Shorta were established as a sports club.
