2006 Mississauga Municipal Election
The 2006 Mississauga municipal elections took place on November 13, 2006, to elect a mayor and 11 city councillors in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The 2006 election was noteworthy for its record number of candidates, in part due to two new wards being added to Council. Mississauga
Mississauga ( ), historically known as Toronto Township, is a city in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is situated on the shores of Lake Ontario in the Regional Municipality of Peel, adjoining the western border of Toronto. With a population of 717,961 as of 2021, Mississauga is the seventh-most populous municipality in Canada, third-most in Ontario, and second-most in the Greater Toronto Area after Toronto itself. The Peel District School Board (PDSB; known as English-Language Public District School Board No. 19 prior to 1999) is a school district that serves approximately 153,000 kindergarten to grade 12 students at more than 259 schools in the Region of Peel (municipalities of Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga) in Ontario, immediately to the west of Toronto. The Conseil scolaire Viamonde (CSV) is a public-secular French first language school board, and manages Primary education, elementary and secondary education, secondary schools in the Ontario Peninsula and the Golden Horseshoe, Greater Golden Horseshoe. 2006 Ontario Municipal Elections
In the 2006 municipal elections in Ontario, voters in the province of Ontario, elected mayors, councillors, school board trustees and all other elected officials in all of Ontario's municipalities. These elections were regulated by thMunicipal Elections Act of Ontario Date Municipal elections in all Ontario municipalities took place on Monday, November 13, 2006 (notwithstanding advance polling arrangements). Currently municipal elections in Ontario have fixed election dates, and the next round of elections are due to take place in November, 2010. Prior to the vote in 2006, the period between elections had been 3 years. Hazel McCallion
Hazel McCallion, (; born February 14, 1921) is a Canadian businesswoman and retired politician who served as the fifth mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, from 1978 until 2014. She is the first and current chancellor of Sheridan College. McCallion was first elected in November 1978, and is the longest-serving mayor in the city's history, having served for 36 years at the time of her retirement in 2014. She was a successful candidate in twelve municipal elections, having been acclaimed twice and re-elected ten other times. Ward 5 (Britannia Woods, Malton) is a municipal ward located in the northeast corner of the city of Mississauga, Ontario. Carolyn Parrish represents the ward's seat on Mississauga City Council and Peel Regional Council since her election in 2014. Eve Adams ( Horvat; born November 7, 1974) is a Canadian politician who served as the Member of Parliament for the federal electoral district of Mississauga—Brampton South from 2011 to 2015. She was elected as a member of the Conservative Party of Canada but, on February 9, 2015, she announced she was resigning as a parliamentary secretary and crossed the floor to join the Liberal Party. Carolyn Parrish
Carolyn Parrish (born Karolina Janoszewska; October 3, 1946) is a politician in Ontario, Canada. She was a member of the House of Commons from 1993 to 2006 representing ridings in Mississauga, Ontario; initially as a Liberal Party MP, and then as an independent MP from 2004 to 2006 following her removal from the party. She became a city councillor for Mississauga City Council in 2006, and remained there until 2010, when she was defeated by Ron Starr. After a brief retirement from politics, Parrish contested and won the position of Councillor for Ward 5 in the 2014 municipal election. Background Parrish was born as Karolina Janoszewska and is of Polish heritage. Her sister is romance novelist Marsha Canham.
