Western Conference (NHL)
The Western Conference (french: Conférence de l'Ouest) is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference. History Originally named the Clarence Campbell Conference (or Campbell Conference for short), it was created in 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The conferences and divisions were re-aligned in 1981 to better reflect the geographical locations of the teams, but the existing names were retained with the Campbell Conference becoming the conference for the NHL's westernmost teams. The names of conferences and divisions were changed in 1993 to reflect their geographic locations. 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs
The 2006 Stanley Cup playoffs for the National Hockey League (NHL) championship began on April 21, 2006, following the 2005–06 regular season. This was the first playoffs since 2004 due to the 2004–05 NHL lockout that cancelled the previously scheduled season. The 16 teams that qualified, seeded one through eight from each conference, played best-of-seven series with re-seeding after the Conference Quarterfinals. The conference champions played a best-of-seven series for the Stanley Cup. The Finals concluded on June 19 with the Carolina Hurricanes winning the Stanley Cup, defeating the Edmonton Oilers in the final series four games to three. Carolina goaltender Cam Ward was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as Most Valuable Player of the playoffs. The Edmonton Oilers would miss the playoffs each year thereafter until 2017. The 2005–06 San Jose Sharks season was the Sharks' 15th season in the National Hockey League (NHL). Off-season Regular season On November 30, 2005, the Boston Bruins traded Joe Thornton - who was the team's leading scorer at the time by a substantial margin - to the San Jose Sharks in a four-player deal which sent Marco Sturm, Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart to Boston. Final standings Playoffs In the first round of the 2006 NHL Western Conference playoffs, the fifth-seeded Sharks defeated the fourth-seeded Nashville Predators in five games. The two teams split the first two games in Nashville's Gaylord Entertainment Center, but when the series shifted to San Jose's HP Pavilion, the Sharks took both games and a stranglehold on the series. The 2005–06 Vancouver Canucks season was the Canucks' 36th NHL season. In the first season after the lockout, the Canucks were expected to fare as well, if not better, than the previous season, where they captured the Northwest Division title. The 2005–06 Los Angeles Kings season was the 39th season (38th season of play) for the National Hockey League franchise. It began with wholesale changes, as during the off-season the Kings acquired centers Pavol Demitra and Jeremy Roenick to help solidify their offense, as well as goaltender Jason LaBarbera. The changes appeared to pay off, as the Kings stormed out to a 15–6–1 record, and first place in the division. The team, however, collapsed, winning only 27 of their remaining 60 games, finishing fourth in the Pacific Division, and out of the playoffs for the third consecutive season.
