2005 Palanca Awards
The 55th Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature was held on September 1, 2005, at the The Peninsula Manila in Makati to commemorate the memory of Don Carlos Palanca Sr. through an endeavor that would promote education and culture in the country. Dr. Emerlinda Roman, the first female president of the University of the Philippines, was Guest of Honor and Speaker at this year’s awarding ceremony. Rodolfo R. Lana Jr., Manuel R. Buising, and Luis P. Gatmaitan were this year's Palanca Hall of Fame awardees. Lana clinched his fifth first prize for “Milagroso” under the Dulang Pantelebisyon category. Buising clinched his fifth first prize for “Niños Inocentes” also under the Dulang Pantelebisyon category. The Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, popularly known as the Palanca Awards, are a set of literary awards for Philippine writers. Usually referred to as the "Pulitzer Prize of the Philippines", it is the country's highest literary honor in terms of prestige. Winning works are entered in the competition either as previously published pieces or in manuscript form. The Palanca Awards, organized by the Carlos Palanca Foundation, is one of the Philippines' longest-running awards programs. The Peninsula Manila (colloquially Manila Pen or simply Manila Peninsula), is a 5-star luxury hotel in the Philippines. Dean Francis Alfar (born 2 January 1969), is a Filipino playwright, novelist and writer of speculative fiction. Allan B. Lopez is a writer from the Philippines. He graduated from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, with a BA in Speech Communication. A fellow for drama in the 38th and the 45th UP National Writers Workshop, Lopez has won a number of awards for his dramatic work, and his plays have been staged in various venues and laboratory festivals (Cultural Center of the Philippines, UP, DLSU, CSB, UST, among others). Luis P. Gatmaitán, M.D., is a Filipino medical doctor and children's author. He appears on a radio program, ''Doctors On Line'', on Monday mornings at DZAS as a medical consultant. Gatmaitán was inducted into the Palanca Hall of Fame in 2005 for his writing. Most of his work is in the genre of children's literature, for which he has garnered many awards, including the Catholic Mass Media Awards.
