2005 Karl Schäfer Memorial
The 2005 Karl Schäfer Memorial (also known as the Vienna Cup) took place from October 14 through 17, 2005 at the Albert Schultz Ice Rink. Skaters competed in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing. It was the final Olympic qualifying competition for the 2006 Winter Olympics. Skaters who placed high enough qualified a spot to the Olympics for their country; there was no individual skater qualification. Countries who had already qualified a spot to the Olympics at the 2005 World Figure Skating Championships were not eligible to qualify more spots here, and their results were discounted from the overall results when allotting spots to countries. Unlike at the World Championships, where countries could qualify more than one spot depending on the placement of the skater, at this competition, countries who qualified were allotted only one spot to the Olympics, regardless of placement. Sean Carlow (born 13 March 1985) is an Australian former competitive figure skater. He is a three-time Australian national champion, from the 2005–06 season to 2007–08. Personal life Sean Carlow was born on 13 March 1985 in Sydney, Australia. He is the son of Liz Cain and nephew of Peter Cain, who competed together for Australia in pair skating at the 1980 Winter Olympics. He is the cousin of American figure skater Ashley Cain. Career Carlow competed mainly in single skating but also appeared as a pair skater early in his career. He and Wafa Asmar won the 2001 Australian novice pairs' title. John William Hamer (born 12 September 1984) is an English former competitive figure skater. He is a three-time British national champion (2005–07). His best result at an ISU Championship was 19th at the 2005 European Championships. Career Early years Hamer started skating relatively late, at age 11. His mother, who had skated during childhood, chose the activity as part of her rehabilitation following a road traffic accident. Her son came with her to the Gillingham Ice rink and, after five weeks of group lessons, he signed up for private lessons with Gary Jones, who would coach him for his whole career.
