The president of Chile ( es, Presidente de Chile), officially known as the President of the Republic of Chile ( es, Presidente de la República de Chile), is the head of state and head of government of the Republic of Chile. The president is responsible for both the Government of Chile and state administration. Although its role and significance has changed over the history of Chile, as well as its position and relations with other actors in the national political organization, it is one of the most prominent political offices. It is also considered one of the institutions that make up the "Historic Constitution of Chile", and is essential to the country's political stability. Under the current Constitution (adopted in 1980), the president serves a four-year term, with immediate re-election being prohibited. Ricardo Lagos
Ricardo Froilán Lagos Escobar (; born 2 March 1938) is a Chilean lawyer, economist and social-democratic politician who served as president of Chile from 2000 to 2006. During the 1980s he was a well-known opponent of the Chilean military dictatorship and astounded contemporaries in 1988 by openly denouncing dictator Augusto Pinochet on live television. He served as Minister of Education from 1990 to 1992 and Minister of Public Works from 1994 to 1998 under president Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle before narrowly winning the 1999-2000 presidential election in a runoff against Independent Democrat Union (UDI) candidate Joaquín Lavín. Lagos was the third president from the center-left Coalition of Parties for Democracy to have governed Chile since 1990. He was succeeded on 11 March 2006 by Socialist Michelle Bachelet, from the same coalition. Tragedy Of Antuco
On May 18, 2005, Major of the Chilean Army Patricio Cereceda, on a routine training mission, ordered 474 conscripts of the 17th Regiment of Los Ángeles, Bío Bío, Los Ángeles to March 28km along the side of the Antuco (volcano), Antuco volcano at altitudes of and {{convert, 1,700, m, ft in spite of some sergeants and corporals appeals to Cereceda to cancel the order on account of the bad weather conditions. Major Cereceda stayed back at a military mountain shelter. Of the five Company (military unit), companies sent, only one was wearing mountain survival gear and the soldiers, most of them teenagers, had been conscription, conscripted less than three months earlier. As a storm struck five hours into the march, the conscripts were completely disoriented by a Whiteout (weather), viento blanco (whiteout). Gladys Marín
Gladys del Carmen Marín Millie (; July 16, 1938 – March 6, 2005) was a Chilean activist and political figure. She was Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Chile (PCCh) (1994–2002) and then president of the PCCh until her death. She was a staunch opponent of General Augusto Pinochet and filed the first lawsuit against him, in which she accused him of committing human rights violations during his seventeen-year dictatorship. Early life Marín was born in Curepto, in the Maule region to Heraclio Marín, a farmer, and school teacher Adriana Millie, later moving with her family to Sarmiento, and then to Talagante. At the age of eleven she settled in Santiago. Political activism Marín joined the Communist party while studying at pedagogy faculty in Santiago. Antonio Andrónico Luksic Abaroa (5 November 1926 – 18 August 2005) was a Chilean businessman of Croatian and Bolivian origin. He founded the Luksic Group, becoming the richest person in Chile, the fourth in Latin America, and the 132nd in the world, with a net worth in 2005 of according to ''Forbes'' magazine. The Luksic Group has interests in the mining, financial, industrial, and beverages sectors. Fernando Alegría (Santiago de Chile, 26 September 1918 – Walnut Creek, California, October 29, 2005) was a Chilean poet, writer, literary critic and scholar. Biography He grew up in the Independencia '' barrio'' of the city. Poets from this ''barrio'' include Pablo Neruda, Violeta Parra and Volodia Teitelboim. Alegría studied al Instituto Nacional General José Miguel Carrera of Santiago and Universidad de Chile. He received a Master of Arts (M.A.) from Bowling Green State University in 1941 and a Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley in 1947. From 1964 to 1967, Alegría was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
