2004–05 Atlanta Thrashers Season
The 2004–05 Atlanta Thrashers season was the sixth season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 25, 1997. No games were played during the 2004–05 NHL season due to the lock-out of the NHL players by the league, however teams business did occur, including the Thrashers' participation in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft that was held on June 26 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Southeast Division (NHL)
The NHL's Southeast Division was formed in 1998 as part of the Eastern Conference due to expansion. The division lasted for 14 seasons (not including the cancelled 2004–05 season) until 2013. The division was intended to group teams primarily in the Southeastern United States. Its original members were the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals. The expansion Atlanta Thrashers joined the division in 1999. The Thrashers' relocation to Winnipeg in 2011 to become the new Winnipeg Jets spurred talks for what became a league realignment in 2013; the Jets still played in the Southeast during the division's final two seasons. Niclas Hävelid
Niclas Anders Hävelid (born April 12, 1973) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey defenceman who last played for Linköpings HC of the Swedish Elitserien during the 2012–13 season. He won a gold medal with Team Sweden at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Playing career While born in Stockholm, he was raised in Enköping, roughly 78 km west of his birthplace. Hävelid began his hockey career playing locally around his home of Enköping in Division 1 of the SIHA. After two seasons with the Enköping he played with the Arlanda Wings for the 1990–1991 season. The following year, he moved to AIK, a team based in Stockholm. He continued with AIK until the 1998–99 season when he went to the Malmö Redhawks. Travis Roche
Travis Roche (born June 17, 1978 in Grande Cache, Alberta and raised in Whitecourt, Alberta) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman who last played for EHC Black Wings Linz of the Austrian Hockey League (EBEL). Playing career An offensive defenceman, Roche played two seasons for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. The Sioux defeated The University of Maine and also Boston College in the Frozen Four (held in Providence, Rhode Island) to capture an NCAA title in his first season of play in the 1999–2000 season, and Roche was named to the WCHA All-Tournament Team. The following season (the final season at “old” Ralph Engelstad Arena), the team captured the MacNaughton Cup as the WCIIA League Regular Season Champion with an 18–4–6 record. Cory Larose
Cory Larose (born May 14, 1975) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played seven games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New York Rangers during the 2003–04 season. Larose played most of his career in the North American minor professional leagues and European leagues. Larose was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick. Larose played junior hockey in British Columbia for the Langley Thunder. After two years with the Thunder, Larose entered the University of Maine. He played four seasons with Maine's Black Bears. The Los Angeles Kings are a professional ice hockey team based in Los Angeles. Jaroslav Modrý (born 27 February 1971) is a Czech former professional ice hockey defenseman who played 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings, Atlanta Thrashers, Dallas Stars, and Philadelphia Flyers. Playing career Modrý was selected 179th overall in the ninth round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. He made his NHL debut with the Devils during the 1993–94 season. American Hockey League
The American Hockey League (AHL) is a professional ice hockey league based in the United States and Canada that serves as the primary Minor league#Ice hockey, developmental league for the National Hockey League (NHL). Since the 2010–11 AHL season, 2010–11 season, every team in the league has an affiliation agreement with one NHL team. When NHL teams do not have an AHL affiliate, players are assigned to AHL teams affiliated with other NHL teams. Kevin Doell
Kevin G. Doell (born July 15, 1979) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Atlanta Thrashers. Playing career Doell grew up in Saskatoon playing his last year of minor hockey for the AAA Saskatoon Blazers Midgets of the SMHL. He then moved onto play for the Melfort Mustangs Jr.A. team of the SJHL. Undrafted, Doell played for the University of Denver Pioneers, where he was an All-WCHA selection in 2003. After completing his collegiate career Doell was invited to the Atlanta Thrashers training camp on September 12, 2003. Adam Berkhoel
Adam James Berkhoel (born May 16, 1981) is an American former professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Atlanta Thrashers. He was drafted 240th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. Playing career Prior to his professional career, Berkhoel attended Stillwater High School before he backstopped the University of Denver to the 2004 NCAA title, with a memorable 1–0 shutout of the University of Maine in the Championship game, including stopping a six-on-three skaters advantage for Maine in the final 90 seconds of the contest. 2005 NHL Entry Draft
The 2005 NHL Entry Draft was the 43rd NHL Entry Draft. Originally scheduled to be held on June 25, the 2004–05 NHL lockout led to the draft being postponed to July 30. Special procedures were required to determine the order of picks, because the previous season had been cancelled due to the lockout. The first overall pick was won in a lottery by the Pittsburgh Penguins, who selected Sidney Crosby. Venue The draft was originally scheduled to be held on June 25, hosted by the Ottawa Senators at the Corel Centre (their home rink). However, the 2004–05 NHL lockout was still ongoing, causing the draft to be postponed. The lockout ended on 22 July with the approval of a new NHL collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The CBA set the new date of the draft as 30 July. The Corel Centre was still available but cannot be used on such short notice. The draft was instead held at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa, Ontario.
