2002 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships
The 36th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships were held in Debrecen, Hungary, in 2002 at Főnix Hall. The team and all-around events were not contested at the 2002 Worlds. The format was similar to that of the 1992 and 1996 Worlds, with medals being awarded for the individual WAG and MAG apparatus. There were three rounds of competition: the preliminary round open to everyone; the semi-finals open to the top sixteen qualifiers; and the finals for the top eight gymnasts. Főnix Hall
Főnix Arena (until 2021 Főnix Hall, ''Főnix Csarnok'') is a multi-purpose arena in Debrecen, Hungary. Főnix Aréna holds 8,500 people and opened in 2002. It hosted the 2002 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The arena was named after the Phoenix, a mythical firebird which is the symbol of Debrecen. Főnix Aréna is the third largest arena in Hungary, and the largest outside Budapest. Background Főnix Hall is located in Debrecen, which is the second largest city of Hungary, in a pleasant environment: close to the Nagyerdő area, near Road 4, along the thoroughfare to Košice called Kassai út. Entering the building through the main entrance, one immediately find itself in the arena space. Vlasios Maras
Vlasios Maras ( el, Βλάσης Μάρας, born 31 March 1983 in Athens) is a Greek gymnast. In the 2004 Summer Olympics, he was a favorite in the horizontal bar competition but failed to qualify for the final after finishing 13th in the qualification round. He competed in the horizontal bar event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as well, but finished in 38th place in qualifying and did not advance to the final. Verona Van De Leur
Verona van de Leur (born 27 December 1985) is a retired Dutch artistic gymnast and adult film performer. She was named Dutch Sportswoman of the Year in 2002 after winning the all-around silver medal at that year's European championships and the silver medal on floor exercise at the world championships. Van de Leur retired from gymnastics in 2008, after which she suffered personal difficulties, including a conviction for blackmail and a prison sentence. Elena Gómez
Elena Gómez Servera (born November 14, 1985, in Manacor, Majorca, Spain) is a Spanish former artistic gymnast. Her best event was floor exercise. She is one of the best gymnasts that Spain has had in the history of this sport, being the only one to get a gold medal in a world championship. Career Junior career At the 2000 Junior European Championships, Gomez placed 6th in both the team final and the individual all-around final. Senior career Gomez made her senior debut in 2001. At the 2001 World Championships in Ghent, Belgium, Gomez and the Spanish team placed 4th in the team final. Individually, Gomez placed 17th in the all-around final and 6th in the balance beam final. Irina Yarotska
Irina Yarotska (also spelled Iryna, born August 29, 1985) is a Ukrainian female artistic gymnast. Yarotska was born in Kyiv, Ukraine and is coached by Ghalina Chieghimagha. Career She started gymnastics at age 6 and began her career as a senior elite gymnast at 16, in 2001. Irina Vladimirovna Yarotskaya (her full name in her native Ukrainian) won the bronze medal on the balance beam at the 2002 World Championships in Debrecen. She also placed fourth in the all-around at the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim, California and went on to win the gold for all around and silver with her team at the 2003 University Games. Ashley Postell
Ashley Postell (born June 9, 1986) is an American former artistic gymnast. Postell was a member of the United States national gymnastics team from 1997 to 2004. During that time she was the world champion on balance beam in 2002 and the national champion on floor exercise in 2003. She was also the bronze medalist in the all-around at the 2002 US Nationals and the 2003 American Cup. In 2004, Postell competed in the US National Championships with the hope of qualifying to Olympic trials, but she placed 13th after a fall on the uneven bars and was named an alternate for the trials. Postell was later invited to attend the trials after a qualified athlete had to withdraw due to injury, but declined because she had taken a break from training after initially missing out and thus was no longer in competition shape, and she felt that the opportunity should be given to "someone who was more ready". Ludmila Ezhova Grebenkova ( (Lyudmila Yezhova Grebenkova), born 4 March 1982) is a Russian former competitive gymnast. She won bronze in the team event at the 2004 Summer Olympics and four medals at the World Championships. Career Ezhova was a mainstay of the Russian team from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s. She also represented Russia at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing where she competed only balance beam. Courtney Anne Kupets Carter (born July 27, 1986) is an American former artistic gymnast. She is a two-time Olympic medalist from the 2004 Olympics (silver in the team competition, bronze on uneven bars), the 2002 world champion on the uneven bars, the 2003 U.S. national all-around champion, and the 2004 U.S. national all-around co-champion (with Carly Patterson). Oksana Aleksandrovna Chusovitina (russian: Оксана Александровна Чусовитина; born 19 June 1975) is an eight-time Olympic gymnast who has competed for the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan, and Germany.
