2002 WPA World Nine-ball Championship
The 2002 WPA World Nine-ball Championship was the 13th edition of the WPA World Championship for 9-Ball Pool. It took place from July 18 to 24, 2002 in Cardiff, Wales. The event was won by American Earl Strickland with a 17:15 victory in the final against Francisco Bustamante. Defending champion Mika Immonen was defeated in the round of 64 against Shannon Daulton. Format The 128 participating players were divided into 16 groups, in which they competed in round robin mode against each other. The top four players in each group qualified for the final round played in the knockout system. Prize money The event's prize money stayed similar to that of the previous years, with winner Earl Strickland winning $65,000. Pat Holtz (born 27 November 1968) is a Scottish professional pool player. Career Early life He was born in Hamilton, Scotland and comes from a family of three older brothers and one younger sister, and has one daughter. Holtz has been playing pool for over twenty years and won many major honours in the game both at UK and American pool. Playing career In UK pool he has been the number one ranked played in Scotland and top eight ranked player in the World (WEPF) rankings. Since taking up American pool in January 2006 he has gone on to be Scottish 9-Ball champion. Radosław Babica
Radosław Babica (Born 18 July 1979) is Polish professional pool player from Kielce, who reached number 12 in the World Pool-Billiard Association world rankings in 2009. Career Babica final reached the European Pool Championships final of the 9-Ball event in 2007. He later also reached the final in the 10-Ball event and three more semi-final appearances at European Championships (one each in the 8-Ball, 9-ball and 14/1 endless). Efren Reyes
Efren Manalang Reyes (born August 26, 1954), popularly known by the nickname "Bata" (English: "Kid"), is a Filipino professional pool player. Reyes is widely considered one of the greatest pool players of all time. Roman Hybler
Roman Hybler (born 27 December 1977 in Liberec, Czech Republic) is a Czech professional pool player. Hybler is most well known for winning the ''2002 German Open'' Euro Tour event. Career Hybler took up pool aged 12. His first club was the ''PBC Woodstock Germering''; later he moved to ''PBC Olympics Munich'', for which he won several titles at the German Junior Championships. In 2001, Hybler entered his first international tournament, as a part of the Euro Tour, and a year later won his only Tour championship, the ''2002 German Open'', defeating Klaus Zobrekis in the final. Steve Knight (pool Player)
Steve Knight (12 July 1973 – 13 January 2019) was an English professional pool player. Knight spent four times representing the European team at the Mosconi Cup and was the winner of the 2000 World Pool League. Career Knight's first major competition was at the 1997 World Pool Masters, reaching the second round of the competition. The following year he reached the quarter-finals of the event. Knight's best result at a world championship was at the 1999 World Professional Pool Championship, reaching the quarter-finals, before losing to Chao Fong-Pang. Oliver Ortmann
Oliver Ortmann (born 11 June 1967) is a German professional pool player from Gelsenkirchen. Ortmann is a three-time world champion, winning the 1995 WPA World Nine-ball Championship and the 2007 and 2010 World Straight Pool Championship. Ortmann became the second player (after Earl Strickland) to win three WPA world championships. With fourteen wins, he the second most successful player (after Ralf Souquet) at the European Pool Championships. Paul Hunter
Paul Alan Hunter (14 October 1978 – 9 October 2006) was an English professional snooker player. He was a three-time Masters champion, winning the event in 2001, 2002, and 2004, recovering from a deficit in the final to win 10–9 on all three occasions. He also won three ranking events: the Welsh Open in 1998 and 2002, and the British Open in 2002. During the 2004–05 snooker season, he attained a career-high ranking of number four in the world.
