2002 PGA Tour Of Australasia
The 2002 PGA Tour of Australasia was a series of men's professional golf events played in Australia and New Zealand. In 2002, the PGA Tour of Australasia reverted to a calendar based schedule from a seasonal one. As such, tournaments ran from November 2001 through to December 2002, with two editions of both the Australian PGA Championship and the Australian Open. In addition, many of the tournaments from the Development Tour were re-incorporated into the main tour schedule in 2002. Three events were co-sanctioned by the European Tour, with the Johnnie Walker Classic also being sanctioned by the Asian Tour, and two were co-sanctioned by the Nationwide Tour. Craig Parry was the tour's leading money winner for the second time, finishing almost A$150,000 ahead of Peter Lonard. He had previously topped the money list in 1995. Peter Lonard
Peter Lawrence Lonard (born 17 July 1967) is an Australian professional golfer who has played mainly on the U.S.-based PGA Tour. Early life Lonard was born at Epping, Sydney. Professional career Lonard turned professional in 1989 and began his career on the PGA Tour of Australasia. He played on the European Tour in 1991 and 1992, where he had very moderate results. He was sidelined for nearly 18 months in 1993–94 after contracting Ross River Fever, a mosquito-carried virus which caused damage to his eyes. He worked as a club professional at Sydney's prestigious Oatlands Golf Club for three years before returning to tournament golf, topping the PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit in 1996/97. He returned to the European Tour in 1997 and has performed steadily with a best Order of Merit placing of 18th in 2002. Holden Australian Open
The Australian Open, owned and run by Golf Australia, is the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia. The Open was first played in 1904 and takes place toward the end of each year. The winner of the tournament receives the ''Stonehaven Cup'', presented by Lord Stonehaven, the Governor-General of Australia from 1925 to 1930. It was first presented in 1930. Status The Australian Open is the "flagship tournament" of the PGA Tour of Australasia, and until 2022 had a special status in the Official World Golf Ranking's points system. Jacob's Creek Open Championship
The South Australian Open was a golf tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia and the Nationwide Tour. History The event started in 1933 as the South Australian Close Championship. In 1950 it was renamed the South Australian Open, although it was only in 1952 that it was opened up to players from outside the state. In the late 1960s, there was no sponsor for the tournament. Therefore "only local club professionals competed." In 1975 there was a similar problem. The South Australian Brewing Company did not renew its sponsorship. Due to economic trouble in the country no other companies were willing to sponsor the event. The event did not take place that year. The event was retitled the Jacob's Creek Open Championship from 2002 to 2007, sponsored by the Jacob's Creek wine brand, and was co-sanctioned during that period by the United States-based Nationwide Tour. Steve Collins (golfer)
Stephen Collins (born 21 July 1964) is an Irish former professional boxer who competed from 1986 to 1997. Known as the Celtic Warrior, Collins is the most successful male Irish boxer in recent professional boxing history, having held the WBO middleweight and super-middleweight titles simultaneously and never losing a fight as champion. Collins' first nineteen professional fights all took place in the United States. ANZ Championship (golf)
The ANZ Championship was a men's professional golf tournament, co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia, that was played in Australia between 2002 and 2004. The event had been played as a 72-hole stroke-play tournament on the Australasian tour from 1998 to 2001 as the ANZ Tour Championship. Uniquely for both tours, it was played using a modified stableford scoring system, similar to the former PGA Tour event The International. This departure from the usual stroke play format, designed to encourage more attacking play, was not received with universal approval as the perception was that it would penalise the steadier players. In the final event in 2004, Laura Davies became the first female golfer to compete on either the Australasian or European Tour, but failed to make an impact, missing the cut and finishing in next to last place on −13 points. Heineken Classic
The Heineken Classic was a men's professional golf tournament played in Australia from 1990 to 2005 as part of the PGA Tour of Australasia. From 1990 to 1992 it was called the Vines Classic. It was held at the Vines Resort in Western Australia from 1990 to 2001 and moved to the Royal Melbourne Golf Club from 2002 to 2005. From 1996 onwards it was co-sanctioned by the European Tour. In 2005 it was the most lucrative golf tournament in Australasia, but the 2006 event was cancelled after the sponsor withdrew and the promoters were unable to find a replacement. This was one of a series of tournaments to be cancelled in Australia within the space of a few years. 2002 European Tour
The 2002 European Tour was the 31st season of golf tournaments since the European Tour officially began in 1972. The season was made up of 44 tournaments counting towards the Order of Merit, which included the four major championships and three World Golf Championships, and several non-counting "Approved Special Events" including the Ryder Cup which had been postponed from 2001. The Order of Merit was won by Retief Goosen, defending the title he won in 2001. Changes for 2002 There were three new tournaments to the European Tour in 2002, the BMW Asian Open in Taiwan, the Omega Hong Kong Open and the ANZ Championship in Australia.
