New York Underground Film Festival
The New York Underground Film Festival was an annual event that occurred each March at Anthology Film Archives in New York City from 1994 through 2008 founded by filmmakers Todd Phillips ('' Road Trip'', '' Old School'') and Andrew Gurland. After Phillips and Gurland turned the festival over to programmer Ed Halter, it became noted for documentary and experimental film programming, and occasionally courted controversy, particularly in its early years. Some of these have included: premiering the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) documentary, '' Chicken Hawk: Men Who Love Boys'', in 1994; premiering a film in 1995 that accused Quentin Tarantino of plagiarism; being protested by Reverend Fred Phelps in 2002 (apparently for not choosing to show a film about Phelps); and premiering a theatrical version of Brad Neely's Harry Potter parody ''Wizard People, Dear Reader'', which eventually led to action by Warner Brothers to suppress future theatrical performances of the wo ... Horns And Halos (film)
''Horns and Halos,'' a 2002 documentary film directed by Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky, is primarily about the difficult road the author (James Hatfield) and publisher (Sander Hicks at Soft Skull Press) travelled to bring ''Fortunate Son'', a controversial biography of George W. Bush to bookshelves again. The film began when the filmmakers got a press release saying that Sander Hicks would be republishing the discredited bio. They followed the process of trying to bring the book back to shelves. After seeing the film at the Rotterdam Film Festival Matthew Tempest wrote in the Guardian, "With stunning revelations of presidential misdeeds, and the Watergate-style forces at hand to see the book is discredited, this documentary is a rolling masterclass on the disturbing complicity of media, money and mendacity." Elisabeth Subrin
Elisabeth Subrin is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker, screenwriter, and visual artist. She is known for her interdisciplinary practice in the contemporary art and independent film worlds. She is a professor in Temple University's Department of Film and Media Arts. Her feature length narrative film ''A Woman, a Part''; starring Maggie Siff, Cara Seymour, John Ortiz, and Khandi Alexander; premiered at The Rotterdam Film Festival in 2016. Joe Sola (born June 16, 1966) is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Vanessa Renwick
Vanessa Renwick (born 1961) is an American artist and filmmaker living in Portland, Oregon. Since 1981, she has been working in experimental and documentary forms—writing, producing films, videos, photography, sculpture and installations. In 1996, she started her own production company, called ''The Oregon Department of Kick Ass''. Renwick's art reflects an interest in place, landscape use and transformation, as well as relationships between bodies and landscapes. She is the recipient of the Bonnie Bronson Fellowship (2014). Oliver Harrison
Oliver Harrison is an English filmmaker, artist and animator. His films have been shown at film festivals around the world including Cannes Film Festival, New York Film Festival, San Francisco Film Festival and the London Film Festival. His feature film ''The Fallen Word'' premiered at the BFI Southbank in 2013. Influential in motion graphics, particularly in kinetic typography, Harrison's work has been featured at Tate Modern, The Barbican Centre and the Institute of Contemporary Arts. Jem Alan Cohen (born 1962) is an Afghan-born American filmmaker based in New York City. Cohen is especially known for his observational portraits of urban landscapes, blending of media formats ( sixteen-millimetre, Super 8, videotape) and collaborations with musicians. He is the recipient of the Independent Spirit Award for feature filmmaking. "Cohen's films have been broadcast in Europe by the BBC and ZDF/ARTE, and in the United States by the Sundance Channel and P.B.S. They are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney, The National Gallery of Art, and Melbourne's Screen Gallery."
