2002 English Greyhound Derby
The 2002 William Hill Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 1 June 2002 at Wimbledon Stadium. The winner received £75,000. Competition report There were 173 entries for the 2002 Derby but one of the Britain's leading greyhounds Top Savings was lame and would miss the event, he had been quoted as a short 4-1 ante post favourite. Despite the loss of Top Savings trainer Charlie Lister and owner Ray White had brought Rapid Ranger out of retirement for an unprecedented third title attempt. The ante-post favourite was El Ronan at 12-1 followed by the Scottish Greyhound Derby first and second, Priceless Rebel and Santovita. In addition to Priceless Rebel trainer Paul Hennessy also sent over Irish Puppy Derby champion Rutland Budgie. First round eliminations included Eclipse champion Bold Mossy and Rutland Budgie but Rapid Ranger won 22 and Santovita went fastest winning in 28.77 and entering the second round as the new favourite. English Greyhound Derby
The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race on the British Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. It was first held at White City Stadium, but moved to Wimbledon Stadium in 1985, and then Towcester Greyhound Stadium in 2017, Nottingham in 2019 and back to Towcester in 2021. Pall Mall Stakes
The Pall Mall Stakes was a prestigious greyhound racing competition held at Oxford Stadium until it closed in 2012. It was run at Harringay Stadium from 1935 until 1987, before moving to Oxford Stadium in 1988. The race never received the status of a classic race in but was classified as a category one race. At Oxford it was held during the month of March and was considered to be a good guide for the upcoming English Greyhound Derby because it attracted many Derby prospects. The 2002 UK & Ireland Greyhound Racing Year was the 76th year of greyhound racing in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Roll of honour Summary The National Greyhound Racing Club (NGRC) released the annual returns, with totalisator turnover at £92,723,060 from 6190 meetings. Droopys Rhys trained by Ted Soppitt was voted Greyhound of the Year. The blue dog had finished third in the Scottish Greyhound Derby behind Priceless Rebel before travelling to Ireland and staying with Reggie Roberts when finishing runner up in the Irish Greyhound Derby behind Bypass Byway. Central Park Stadium
Central Park Stadium formerly Sittingbourne Stadium is a greyhound racing track, and speedway track and former football stadium located in Murston, Sittingbourne, Kent, England. Greyhound racing takes place every Friday evening in addition to their four SIS morning meetings. Facilities The stadium was built to a capacity of approximately 6000, with 2000 seats available in the Main Stand, two end terraces and a large covered terrace opposite the Main Stand. Belle Vue Stadium
Belle Vue Stadium was a greyhound racing track in Belle Vue, Manchester, England, where the first race around an oval track in Britain was held on 24 July 1926. It has also been used for motorcycle speedway, as the home ground of Elite League team Belle Vue Aces from 1988 until 2015, and from 1999 until 2019 for stock car racing and banger racing. The track was owned (1926–2014) and operated (1926–2019) by the Greyhound Racing Association. The Crown Oil Pension Fund bought the stadium in 2014. The stadium had luxury glass-fronted grandstands, restaurants, hospitality boxes and bars. Brian Clemenson
Brian Adrian Clemenson (born 1963) is a retired English greyhound trainer. He is a three times United Kingdom champion Champion Trainer. Profile Clemenson was a head man for Kenny Linzell before taking out a trainer's licence. He raced out of Brighton & Hove Greyhound Stadium which he joined after a spell at Hackney Wick Stadium. He was initially based at Bersheda Kennels in Wickford but a decade later moved to the Romford Greyhound Kennels in Billingshurst. He came to prominence in the early 1990s and after reaching multiple finals finally won a feature competition in 1999 when he won the Pall Mall Stakes. Seamus Cahill
Seamus Augustine Cahill is an Irish born greyhound trainer. He is a British champion trainer and winner of the English Greyhound Derby. Career Seamus Cahill is from Mullinhoe, County Waterford and joined Catford Stadium in 1994 working for Paddy Milligan. In 1997 he took control of Milligan's Catford Stadium racing kennels in Keston and established himself as a leading trainer. He reached the final of the Laurels in his maiden year of 1997. Eclipse (greyhounds)
The Eclipse is a greyhound racing competition held annually at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium. It was inaugurated in 1938 at Lythalls Lane Stadium in Coventry. Following the closure of the stadium in 1964 the competition ended for a period of three years before briefly being re-introduced at Kings Heath Stadium. Kings Heath closed down in 1971 which led to Hall Green Stadium acting as a temporary host before the race returned to its roots in Coventry at the Brandon Stadium. Coventry stopped greyhound racing in 1986, which resulted in Nottingham taking the event and holding it since. In 2022, the prize money increased with the sponsorship of Premier Greyhound Racing and the winners purse was £20,000. Wimbledon Stadium
Wimbledon Stadium, also known as Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, was a greyhound racing track located in Wimbledon in southwest London, England. It also hosted stock car and other small circuit motor racing events, and until 2005 hosted motorcycle speedway. The stadium hosted the English Greyhound Derby every year between 1985 and 2016. Facing declining attendances and with no renovations undertaken for many years, the stadium was put up for sale by the owners, the Greyhound Racing Association, and closed permanently in March 2017. The site was purchased by Galliard Homes Limited, in order to build 600 new apartments and a new football stadium, the new Plough Lane, for AFC Wimbledon. Puppy Derby (Irish Greyhounds)
The Puppy Derby also known as the Juvenile Derby is a greyhound racing competition held annually at Shelbourne Park in Dublin, Ireland. The event switched to Shelbourne following the closure of Harold's Cross Stadium in the city district of Harold's Cross. It is a major competition inaugurated in 1943 and is an integral part of the Irish greyhound racing calendar. The event is the Irish equivalent of the Puppy Derby held in the UK at Wimbledon Stadium. Paul Hennessy is an Irish greyhound trainer and thoroughbred horse trainer. He is a two-time winner of the English Greyhound Derby and a winner of the Irish Greyhound Derby and three times winner of the Scottish Greyhound Derby and is regarded as one of Ireland's leading trainers. Greyhound racing Based in Garryduff, Gowran, County Kilkenny he first gained success in the 1986 Tipperary Cup.
