Canadian Football League West Division
The West Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League (CFL), its counterpart being the East Division (CFL), East Division. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the West Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. The five teams in the West Division are the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. There were also two now-defunct teams from the Canadian Football League in the United States, mid 1990s United States expansion of the CFL who played in the West Division. 2002 Montreal Alouettes Season
The 2002 Montreal Alouettes finished in first place in the East Division with a 13–5–0–1 record. The Alouettes hired coach Don Matthews, after a terrible ending to the 2001 season. They defeated the Toronto Argonauts 35–18 in the East Final to advance to the Grey Cup. They met their most frequent Grey Cup partner, the Edmonton Eskimos, in front of a loud, cold, hometown Eskimo crowd, they won 25–16, winning their first championship since 1977, when they defeated these same Edmonton Eskimos in the famous Ice Bowl at Olympic Stadium. 2002 BC Lions Season
The 2002 BC Lions finished in third place in the West Division with a 10–8 record. After beginning the season with a 1–5 record, general manager Adam Rita fired head coach Steve Buratto and coached the team on an interim basis for the rest of the year. He guided the group to a 9–3 turnaround which led to an appearance in the West-Semi Final. Despite the turnaround, Rita was fired as general manager/coach after the playoff loss. The BC Lions are a professional Canadian football team based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Lions compete in the West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL), and play their home games at BC Place.
