2001 Spa 24 Hours
The 2001 Proximus 24 Spa World Championship GT was the 55th running of the Spa 24 Hours. It was also the seventh round the 2001 FIA GT Championship season, marking the first time that the FIA GT Championship had the Spa 24 Hours on their schedule. The addition of the FIA GT Championship turned the Spa 24 Hours from a touring car event into a sports car race. This event combined the FIA GT's two classes (GT and N-GT) with cars from smaller national sports car series (designated Category 2) as well as cars from single-make series (designated Category 3). It took place at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, over August 4–5, 2001. Official results Class winners in bold. Spa 24 Hours
The 24 Hours of Spa is an Endurance racing (motorsport), endurance racing event for cars held annually since 1924 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Stavelot, Belgium. It is currently sponsored by TotalEnergies. History The Spa 24 Hours was conceived by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem just one year after the inaugural 24 Hours of Le Mans was run. It debuted in 1924 over a circuit on public roads between the towns of Francorchamps, Malmedy and Stavelot, under the auspices of the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium (RACB). The present circuit was inaugurated in 1979 with only slight variations since then. The Spa 24 Hours was part of the European Touring Car Championship from 1966 to 1973, again in 1976 and from 1982 to 1988 (with the exception of 1987 Spa 24 Hour, 1987 when it was part of the 1987 World Touring Car Championship, inaugural World Touring Car Championship). Paul Belmondo
Paul Alexandre Belmondo (born 23 April 1963) is a French racing driver who raced in Formula One for the March and Pacific Racing teams. He was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine, the son of actor Jean-Paul Belmondo and grandson of sculptor Paul Belmondo. Around 1981, Paul gained publicity for becoming the lover of Princess Stéphanie of Monaco. Through 1987, he participated in Formula 3 and Formula 3000, although he was never a top 10 championship finisher in either. In 1992, he joined the March F1 team as a pay driver, getting a ninth place at the Hungarian Grand Prix, but only qualifying 4 more times before he ran out of money and was replaced by Emanuele Naspetti. Stéphane De Groodt (born 3 March 1966) is a Belgian comedian, humorist and former racing driver. Life and career Early life and education Stéphane De Groodt is the son of an engineer at Texaco and a housewife who takes care of handicapped children in foundations. Dyslexic, he has a chaotic scholarity, which already translates his wills to play comedy. He did not obtain any graduation and decided to become a comedian as well as a racing driver. His parents offered him a racing driver suit and a helmet. He then went through several small jobs, including barman, journalist, marketing assistant, editor and advertiser, while entering little by little the field of the competition. Pekaracing NV, competing as PK Carsport, is a racing team that currently competes in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series as well as the Belcar Trophy in conjunction with Russell Racing. The team has previously competed in other series such as the FIA GT Championship. History PK Carsport has a long history in Belgian autosport. In 1968 PEKA Racing was founded by racing driver Paul Kumpen. Besides racing Kumpen was an entrepreneur and partial owner of Ridley Bikes. The team initially started in rallycross. Andrea Chiesa (born 6 May 1964) is a former Formula One driver from Switzerland. He participated in 10 Grands Prix, debuting on 1 March 1992. Career Chiesa began racing in 1980 with karts, and continued to cars in 1985, competing in Italian Formula 3 and Formula 3000. In 1992, he progressed to Formula One and raced with the Fondmetal team. However, he qualified for only three grands prix out of ten, and scored no championship points after retiring from each race. After the German GP, the team replaced him with Eric van de Poele. Freisinger Motorsport is a German company which has tuned, restored, and raced Porsches since 1967. Founded by Manfred Freisinger in Karlsruhe, the company now is run by his son Manfred Freisinger Jr. Since 1992, the company has competed internationally, initially running in the Porsche Supercup, before moving into the BPR Global GT Series and 24 Hours of Le Mans. Freisinger's first international victory came at the 1998 Petit Le Mans, winning in the LMGT2 class with a Porsche 911 GT2. Antonio García Navarro (born June 5, 1980) is a Spanish professional racing driver. He has three class wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, winning GT1 with Aston Martin Racing in and with Corvette Racing in (GT1) and (GTE-Pro). Single-seater career After a childhood in karting, Madrid-born García began racing cars in Formula Renault Campus in 1997. In 1998 he moved to the new Open Fortuna by Nissan series. Dieter Quester
Dieter Quester (born 30 May 1939 in Vienna) is an active touring car racing driver from Austria. Dieter has participated in 53 24-Hour Races. He competed in a single Formula One race in which he finished ninth. Starting with motorboats in the 1950s, he became part of the Formula 2 team of BMW which intended to take part in the 1969 German Grand Prix. Teammate Gerhard Mitter was killed at the Nürburgring while practising with the ''BMW 269'', though. As a suspension or steering failure was suspected, the BMW team with Quester and Hubert Hahne withdrew from the race, as did Mitter's teammate at Porsche, Hans Herrmann.
