19th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly
The 19th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly in Canada was established by the results of the 2019 Northwest Territories general election on October 1, 2019. In the 2019 election, 9 of the 19 MLAs elected were women, a record in both NWT and all of Canada. Previously, the most sitting women MLAs was three. On July 27, following the resignation of Jackson Lafferty and the subsequent by-election victory of Jane Weyallon Armstrong, the Legislature had 10 women to 9 men, and became the first jurisdiction in Canada to have a majority of women legislators. Caroline Cochrane
Caroline Cochrane (born December 5, 1960) is a Canadian politician, who is the 13th and current premier of the Northwest Territories. She is one of three currently serving female premiers in Canada and the second female premier of the Northwest Territories after Nellie Cournoyea, who served from 1991 to 1995. She was formerly known as Caroline Cochrane-Johnson. Life and career Cochrane was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, in 1960 and moved with her family to Yellowknife in 1963, where she grew up. She was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 2015 election, representing the electoral district of Range Lake. Prior to her election to the legislature, Cochrane was CEO of the Centre for Northern Families, a social-service agency administered by the Yellowknife Women's Society in Yellowknife. The premier of the Northwest Territories is the Premier (Canada), first minister and head of government for the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian territory of the Northwest Territories. It is one of seven districts that represent Yellowknife, the territorial capital. Richard Edjericon
Richard Edjericon is a Canadian politician in the Northwest Territories. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in a 2022 by-election, representing the electoral district of Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh. Edjericon previously ran for the seat in the 2019 election, placing second behind to Steve Norn. Edjericon is a former chief of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, during which he signed the Akaitcho Framework Agreement. Previously, he was also a member of the band council for ten years and was the band housing manager. He has also served six years as the chair of the Mackenzie Valley Impact Review Board. Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh
Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh is a territorial electoral district in the Northwest Territories, Canada, which elects one member to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. The district consists of the communities of N'Dilo, Lutselk'e, Fort Resolution and Dettah. It had an estimated population of 1,412 in 2012. The district was created in 2013 when the ridings of Tu Nedhe and Weledeh were merged. It was first contested in the 2015 Northwest Territories general election. Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) Steve Norn was elected in the 2019 territorial election, but in late 2021 became the first MLA to be removed from the Legislature by his colleagues. This event was a consequence of Norn's refusal to follow Covid-19 protocols, and subsequent actions on his part against his colleagues during the ensuing investigation.
