1999 Ontario Nokia Cup
The 1999 Nokia Cup, southern Ontario men's provincial curling championship was held February 8–14 at the Brantford & District Civic Centre in Brantford, Ontario. The winning rink of Rich Moffatt, Howard Rajala, Chris Fulton and Paul Madden from Ottawa would go on to represent Ontario at the 1999 Labatt Brier in Edmonton, Alberta. Teams The teams included eight regional winners, two challenge round winners, the defending Brier champion and World champion Wayne Middaugh rink and the 1998 Olympic silver medallist Mike Harris rink. Brantford, Ontario
Brantford ( 2021 population: 104,688) is a city in Ontario, Canada, founded on the Grand River in Southwestern Ontario. It is surrounded by Brant County, but is politically separate with a municipal government of its own that is fully independent of the county's municipal government. Brantford is situated on the Haldimand Tract, traditional territory of the Neutral, Mississauga, and Haudenosaunee peoples. The city is named after Joseph Brant, an important Mohawk leader, soldier, farmer and slave owner. Brant was an important Loyalist leader during the American Revolutionary War and later, after the Haudenosaunee moved to the Brantford area in Upper Canada. Many of his descendants, and other First Nations people, live on the nearby Six Nations of the Grand River reserve south of Brantford; it is the most populous reserve in Canada. Mike Harris (curler)
Michael R. Harris2017 Brier Media Guide: Previous Rosters (born June 9, 1967 in Georgetown, Ontario) is a Canadian curler. Harris led his team to win the silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics. Curling career Relatively unknown due to the shadows cast out of Ontario in the form of superstars Russ Howard, Ed Werenich and Wayne Middaugh, and having not qualified to a Brier out of Ontario yet, Harris rose to stardom when he skipped his team of Richard Hart, Collin Mitchell and George Karrys to a win at the Canadian Olympic trials in 1997, qualifying the team for the 1998 Winter Olympics. They would defeat the favoured Kevin Martin 6-5 in the trials final, after a 7-2 round robin record had the team sole 1st and a direct bye to the final. Greg Balsdon
Gregory Balsdon (born October 9, 1977) is a Canadian curler from North York, Ontario. He currently skips a team on the World Curling Tour. Curling career Balsdon was born in Toronto, Ontario. In 1995, Balsdon won the Ontario Schoolboy championship for his Don Mills Collegiate Institute team. In 1996, he won the provincial junior mixed title. Balsdon skips one of the top teams in Ontario. As of 2019, Balsdon has played in 13 provincial championships. He first played at the provincials in 1999, playing for John Base (4th place). He left the Base rink in 2000 to form his own team. He qualified again in 2002 as a skip, again finishing 4th. His next provincial was the 2005 Ontario Kia Cup, where his rink finished 4th once again. Joe Frans
Joseph Mark Frans (born July 1, 1975 in Grimsby, Ontario) is a Canadian curler from Guelph, Ontario. Frans is most notable for being a two-time provincial champion and for being suspended from competitive curling for cocaine usage. Career Frans obtained fame as a curler in 1991, when he won the provincial school boys championship and the provincial junior mixed championship while curling in Smiths Falls, Ontario. In 1993, Frans won the provincial junior championship while playing in St. Catharines, Ontario. At the 1993 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, his team would finish with a 6-5 record. In 1994, Frans would win a second straight provincial championship, this time with Bradford, Ontario. At the 1994 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, he skipped the Ontario team to a 4th place finish (7-4 record), just out of the playoffs. Craig Kochan
Craig Kochan (born October 18, 1969 in Marathon, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian curler from Toronto. He has played competitively in both Northern and southern Ontario and in the Yukon. As of 2019, he has won three Northern Ontario junior titles, the Yukon men's championship, a Northern Ontario mixed title and has played in seven Ontario provincial championships, two Northern Ontario provincial championships and two Yukon championships. Career Juniors Kochan's junior career involved winning the Northern Ontario junior title three years straight in 1987, 1988 and 1989. This qualified him to represent Northern Ontario at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships each of those years. Etobicoke
Etobicoke (, ) is an administrative district of, and one of six municipalities amalgamated into, the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Scott Bailey (curler)
Scott Bailey (born March 12, 1970) is a Canadian curler. He is best known however for being the long-time lead for Wayne Middaugh. It was with Middaugh that Bailey won the 1998 Ford World Curling Championships. Bailey was a member of the Middaugh rink from 1994 to 2010, when Middaugh left the Russ Howard rink. During this period, the Middaugh rink won three provincial championships (1998, 2001 and 2005), in addition to winning the 1998 Labatt Brier and 1998 World Championships. Bailey played for the John Epping rink from 2010 to 2014. Ian Tetley
Ian J. Tetley (born August 14, 1962) is a Canadian curler from Oakville, Ontario. He is a three-time Brier and World Champion. Career Tetley is originally from Thunder Bay, in Northern Ontario, which gets a separate team at the Brier. In 1985, he played second for Al Hackner, for which they won he won his first Brier, and World Championships, that same season. Tetley later moved to southern Ontario to play for second Ed Werenich. In 1990, Tetley won his second Brier, this time representing (southern) Ontario with Werenich. That team also won the World Championships. In 1994, he joined Wayne Middaugh's new rink, to play as his second. They won the Brier in 1998, and later Tetley picked up his third World Championship. Graeme McCarrel
Graeme McCarrel (born November 27, 1960) is a Canadian curler from Brampton, Ontario. He is a former Brier and World Champion. In 1980, as a junior, McCarrel played third for John Kawaja. They lost in the finals of the Canadian Junior Curling Championships that year. After juniors, McCarrel moved to play with veteran Paul Savage. McCarrel won his first provincial title in 1988, playing second for Savage. McCarrel then moved to play third for Wayne Middaugh. With Middaugh, McCarrel won three more provincial championships, in 1998, 2001 and 2005. In 1998 the team won the Brier, and the World Curling Championships. Tilbury, Ontario
Tilbury (2016 population 4,768) is a community within the municipality of Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada. It is located southwest of Chatham-Kent and east of Windsor on Highway 401. History The nearby townships of Tilbury West and Tilbury East were named for the port of Tilbury in the English county of Essex. A settlement, called Henderson (after the local postmaster), was established with the construction of the Canada Southern Railway in 1875. The name of the post office was changed to Tilbury Centre after the adjoining townships and the community was incorporated as a village in 1887. The name changed again to Tilbury a few years later, in 1895, and incorporated as a town in 1910. Tilbury is also home to the largest antique mall in its part of Southern Ontario. Tilbury Curling Club
Tilbury is a port town in the borough of Thurrock, Essex, England. The present town was established as separate settlement in the late 19th century, on land that was mainly part of Chadwell St Mary. It contains a 16th century fort and an ancient cross-river ferry. Tilbury is part of the Port of London with a major deep-water port which contributes to the local economy.
