A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Orange on 25 May 1996 following the retirement of sitting member, Garry West. On the same day, by-elections were held in the seats of Clarence, Pittwater, Southern Highlands and Strathfield. All seats were retained by the Liberal-National Parties, with the exception of Clarence. In Orange, the National Party suffered a swing of 13.82% against it on a two-party preferred basis. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Electoral District Of Orange
Orange is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is a regional electorate that covers four local government areas in their entirety: the City of Orange, Cabonne Council, Parkes Shire and Forbes Shire. The seat has been held by Philip Donato since a by-election in November 2016. Donato was initially elected as a member of the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party but resigned in 2022 and became an Independent. History Orange was created in 1859. Orange and Hartley were absorbed into Bathurst, which elected three members under proportional representation, between 1920 and 1927. In 1927 Bathurst, Hartley and Orange were recreated as single-member electorates. The area tilts strongly toward the National Party, as Labor hasn't held the seat since 1947, although it came close to winning at the 1996 by-election. Garry West
Garry Bruce West (born 19 January 1949) is an Australian politician. He was a National Party Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1976 to 1995, representing the electorate of Orange. He held several Ministerial positions in the Nick Greiner and then John Fahey Liberal-National coalition Government. Private life West was educated at Canobolas Public School and Orange High School in Orange, New South Wales. A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Clarence on 25 May 1996 following the resignation of sitting member, Ian Causley (), to contest federal seat of Page at the 1996 election. On the same day, by-elections were held in the seats of Orange, Pittwater, Southern Highlands and Strathfield. All seats were retained by the Liberal-National Parties, with the exception of Clarence, that was won by the Labor Party with a swing on a two-party preferred basis of 13.96%. The successful ALP candidate was Harry Woods who was the sitting member for the federal seat of Page when he was defeated at the 1996 federal election by Ian Causley, ironically the previous member for Clarence. 1996 Southern Highlands State By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Southern Highlands on 25 May 1996. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the sitting member, former Premier of New South Wales John Fahey (), who vacated the seat to contest the federal electorate of Macarthur at the 1996 Australian federal election. On the same day, by-elections were held in the seats of Clarence, Orange, Pittwater and Strathfield. Four of the five recontested seats were retained by the Liberal-National Coalition, with the exception of Clarence. In Southern Highlands, there was three-cornered-contest between coalition partners, the Liberal and parties. Two-party Preferred
In Australian politics, the two-party-preferred vote (TPP or 2PP) is the result of an election or opinion poll after preferences have been distributed to the highest two candidates, who in some cases can be independents. For the purposes of TPP, the Liberal/National Coalition is usually considered a single party, with Labor being the other major party. Typically the TPP is expressed as the percentages of votes attracted by each of the two major parties, e.g. "Coalition 50%, Labor 50%", where the values include both primary votes and preferences. The TPP is an indicator of how much swing has been attained/is required to change the result, taking into consideration preferences, which may have a significant effect on the result. The TPP assumes a two-party system, i.e. that after distribution of votes from less successful candidates, the two remaining candidates will be from the two major parties. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament.
