1994 Progress Party National Convention
The 1994 national convention of the Progress Party of Norway was held from 15 April to 17 April at the hotel Bolkesjø Turisthotell in Bolkesjø, Telemark. It was originally set up to be a normal convention with 157 delegates in a non-election year, but because of mounting antagonism between a traditionalist and a libertarian faction, it became clear some months before the conventions that personal positions could be at stake. The party leader seat, held by Carl I. Hagen since 1978, was up for re-election. The deputy leaders Ellen Wibe and Hans J. Røsjorde was not up for election until 1995, but there were talks about forming a motion of no confidence against Wibe. The political disagreements roughly corresponded to a cleavage between two factions. The traditionalist (also called populist) faction was represented by party leader Carl I. Stephen Bråthen
Stephen Bråthen (born 2 September 1964) is a Norwegian politician formerly representing the Progress Party (Norway), Progress Party. He was born in Lørenskog. He took a basic education in economics before enrolling in the Norwegian Armed Forces. He served in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon from 1985 to 1986. From 1986 to 1989 he worked in the bank Den norske Creditbank, and from 1989 to 1993 he worked as an advisor for the Progress Party parliamentary group. He was a member of Ski, Norway, Ski municipal council (Norway), municipal council from 1983 to 1987, then served as a deputy member for one period before entering the executive committee in 1991. He chaired the local chapter of the Progress Party from 1986 to 1989, and was a member of the national board from 1993 to 1994. 1994 Norwegian European Union Membership Referendum
A referendum on joining the European Union was held in Norway on 27 and 28 November 1994. Membership of what was then the European Community had previously been rejected in a 1972 referendum, and by French veto in 1962. Campaign The "No" campaign was led by Anne Enger Lahnstein, leader of the Centre Party. The main themes of the "No" campaign were loss of sovereignty if Norway should join the Union, as well as the fundamental differences in economic structure between Norway and the EU, as Norway has an economy based heavily on natural resources (especially oil and fish), in contrast to the EU's more industrial economy. New Future Coalition Party
The New Future Coalition Party ( no, Samlingspartiet Ny Fremtid, SNF) was a Norway, Norwegian political party, which was founded by Member of Parliament Finn Thoresen in 1993. The party was never successful in elections, and merged with the Christian Conservative Party to form the Christian Unity Party in 1998. Finn Thoresen
Finn Thoresen (21 January 1932 – 30 May 2004) was a Norwegian businessman and politician for the Progress Party. He was a member of the central administration of the Progress Party (then Anders Lange's Party) from 1973 to 1976, and was chairman of its Østfold chapter from 1974 to 1975. From 1983 to 1990 he was the deputy mayor of Ski. He was elected deputy Member of Parliament (MP) for the Progress Party from Akershus from 1981 to 1985, and in 1989 he was elected as a regular MP. In November 1992 he however left the party, citing strong disagreements with the influence and development of the Youth of the Progress Party, which he claimed had "misunderstood" liberalism. Free Democrats (Norway)
The Free Democrats ( no, Fridemokratene) is a political organization formed by former members of the Progress Party of Norway in 1994. The 1993 election saw the support of the Progress Party (6.3 percent and 10 representatives) halved. After the 1994 Progress Party national convention several representatives of the "libertarian wing" broke out and founded a party more ideologically consistently libertarian, the Free Democrats. Four of the defectors were MPs, and formed an independent group in Parliament of Norway. Its first leader Ellen Christine Christiansen was among the four MPs, and also served in Oslo city council until 1995. In the Norwegian county elections, 1995 the party received 1,932 votes, 0.09% of the votes.
