1989 Southwest Outdoor Soccer League
The 1989 Southwest Outdoor Soccer League season was the first outdoor and fourth overall season of the Southwest Indoor Soccer League. Overview After running three winter indoor seasons beginning in 1986, the Southwest Indoor Soccer League added its first summer outdoor season in 1989. With the move outdoors, the league added the Colorado Comets and Tulsa Renegades who quickly proved their worth when they finished at the top of the standing. The move outdoor brought a short-lived name change as the league rebranded itself as the Southwest Outdoor Soccer League. Southwest Indoor Soccer League
United Soccer League (USL), formerly known as United Soccer Leagues, is a soccer league in the United States and Canada. It organizes several men's and women's leagues, both professional and amateur. Men's leagues currently organized are the USL Championship, USL League One, USL League Two, and the youth Super Y League. A new women's league, the USL W League, began play in 2022. It is directly affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation and the United States Adult Soccer Association. The USL is headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Colorado Comets
The Colorado Comets were an American soccer club based in Denver, Colorado founded in 1985 which later competed in the SISL and USISL. History Founded by Ed Eid in 1985, the team began as an amateur club coached by Kelvin Norman. That year, they lost to the Mitre Eagles of Seattle, Washington in the semifinals of the National Amateur Indoor Championship. In 1989, the Comets entered the Southwest Outdoor Soccer League, winning the championship that year. Eid coached the team, winning Coach of the Year honors and Norman was selected as the league MVP. In October 1989, Norman returned to the position of head coach. Despite winning three titles, the Comets began having financial difficulties in 1991. The Austin Lone Stars were a soccer club that competed in the SISL, USISL and United Soccer Leagues from 1987 to 2000. The club originally started in 1987/88 as the Austin Sockadillos in the original indoor SISL league. They became the Austin Lone Stars in 1994. Kelvin Norman
Kelvin Norman was an American soccer defender who played in the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League and SISL. He was the 1989 Southwest Outdoor Soccer League MVP and coached the Colorado Comets in the SISL and USISL. In 1978, Norman signed with the Portland Timbers of the North American Soccer League. He spent two seasons with the Timbers, largely in the reserves. In the fall of 1979, he moved to the New England Tea Men where he saw time in three games during the NASL indoor season.
