The 1989 Italian Open was a tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at the Foro Italico in Rome in Italy that was part of the 1989 Nabisco Grand Prix and of the Category 5 tier of the 1989 WTA Tour. The men's tournament was held from 15 May through 21 May 1989, while the women's tournament was played from 8 May through 14 May 1989. Alberto Mancini and Gabriela Sabatini won the singles titles. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. Manon Bollegraf
Manon Maria Bollegraf (born 10 April 1964) is a former professional tennis player from the Netherlands, who was a quarterfinalist at the singles event of the 1992 French Open, a finalist in doubles at the 1997 Wimbledon Championships, and a four-time mixed doubles Grand Slam champion. She also finished fourth in women's doubles at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Career Bollegraf reached her highest ranking on the WTA Tour on 9 July 1990, when she became world No. 29. Danilo Marcelino
Danilo Marcelino (born 8 March 1966) is a former professional tennis player from Brazil. Career Marcelino entered the singles draw of a Grand Slam on four occasions but only once progressed past the opening round, which was at the 1989 Australian Open, defeating Jan Apell in five sets. In the second round he was eliminated in straight sets by Mark Woodforde. He had more success in the men's doubles, with a best showing coming at the 1990 US Open, where he and countryman Nelson Aerts made the third round. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court.
