1986–87 Coventry City F.C. Season
During the 1986–87 English football season, Coventry City competed in the Football League First Division. Season summary Coventry City won the FA Cup, defeating Tottenham Hotspur, who had spent much of the season competing for a unique domestic treble of the league and the League and FA Cups, 3–2 in a final considered by many to be one of the greatest FA Cup finals of all time. The FA Cup triumph was Coventry's first (and, as of 2024, only) major trophy. The only downside to Coventry's victory was UEFA's decision to extend the ban on English teams competing in European competition to a third season, denying Coventry a place in the European Cup Winners' Cup. John Sillett
John Charles Sillett (20 July 1936 – 30 November 2021) was an English football player and manager. He played for Chelsea, Coventry City and Plymouth Argyle. He won the Championship with Chelsea in 1955, playing alongside his brother Peter Sillett. He was manager of Coventry City from 1986 until 1990, winning the FA Cup in 1987, and also had two spells as manager of Hereford United. Early life John Sillett was born in Southampton, Hampshire, on 20 July 1936. His father, Charlie Sillett, was a footballer, playing for Southampton between 1931 and 1938. Lloyd McGrath
Lloyd McGrath (born 24 February 1965) is an English retired professional footballer. A hard-working midfielder, McGrath made his senior debut for Coventry City on 28 April 1984 in one of their heaviest defeats ever - an 8-2 Football League First Division defeat at Southampton. However, three years later he took part in the biggest success of their history so far - the 1987 FA Cup Final triumph over Tottenham Hotspur. Micky Gynn
Michael Gynn (born 19 August 1961) is an English former footballer who played as a midfielder in the Football League for Peterborough United, Coventry City and Stoke City. Career Gynn began his career with his hometown club, Peterborough United, where he scored 39 goals from 188 appearances in all competitions, before joining First Division club Coventry City for a fee of £60,000. He spent ten years and accumulated almost 300 appearances at the club, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1987. Gynn then moved on to Stoke City in August 1993 where he played in 29 matches in the 1993–94 season before retiring. He became a postman in the Coventry area, and works as a match statistician for the Press Association. David Anthony Bennett (born 11 July 1959) is an English former professional footballer. Stephen Philip Sedgley (born 26 May 1968) is an English former professional footballer, and football manager. As a player, he was a midfielder and a defender. He was capped 11 times for England at under-21 level. who made more than 450 appearances in the Football League and Premier League for Coventry City, Tottenham Hotspur, Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers. England National Under-21 Football Team
The England national under-21 football team, also known as England under-21s or England U21(s), is considered to be the feeder team for the England national football team. This team is for England players aged under 21 at the start of the calendar year in which a two-year European Under-21 Football Championship campaign begins, so some players can remain with the squad until the age of 23. Graham Rodger
Graham Rodger (born 1 April 1967) is an English football coach, former professional footballer and scout. As a player, he was a defender from 1984 until 1998 for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City and Luton Town before finishing his career with a six-year stint at Grimsby Town, where he retired in 1998 following the club's promotion to Football League First Division. Since his retirement from the playing side of the game Rodger has remained with Grimsby, firstly holding the position of community coach and later assistant manager and caretaker manager. In 2006, he had a brief stint as the club's permanent manager but was dismissed after 5 months in charge. Trevor Peake
Trevor Peake (born 10 February 1957) is an English retired football player and coach. In his playing career he represented Nuneaton Borough, Lincoln City, Luton Town, and Coventry City, with whom he won the 1987 FA Cup. He went into coaching at Luton, which was followed by a spell at Coventry, before spending 17 years in the coaching setup at Leicester City. He retired in 2020. Playing career Born in Nuneaton, Peake started his career at hometown club Nuneaton Borough, before joining Lincoln City. Peake was signed by Bobby Gould for Coventry City in 1983 for a fee of £100,000. He formed a central defence pairing with Brian Kilcline that would last for seven seasons.
