1985 Victorian State Election
The 1985 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 2 March 1985, was for the 50th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect all 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. Since the previous election, the number of members of the Legislative Assembly was increased by 7 to 88. Lindsay Thompson, who led the Liberal Party to a defeat at the 1982 election with a 17-seat swing against it, resigned the leadership of the party on 5 November 1982. He was succeeded by Jeff Kennett. At the election, the incumbent Labor Party government led by John Cain Jr. maintained its electoral support, though the Liberal Party did increase the number of seats. It was the first time since Federation that a Labor government had been reelected in Victoria. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch)
The Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch), commonly known as Victorian Labor, is the semi-autonomous Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). The Victorian branch comprises two major wings: the parliamentary wing and the organisational wing. The parliamentary wing comprising all elected party members in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, which when they meet collectively constitute the party caucus. The parliamentary leader is elected from and by the caucus, and party factions have a strong influence in the election of the leader. The leader's position is dependent on the continuing support of the caucus (and party factions) and the leader may be deposed by failing to win a vote of confidence of parliamentary members. Electoral District Of Mornington
The electoral district of Mornington is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. The electorate can be described as outer metropolitan and rural, including animal farming, grape production and wineries. The district is 155 square kilometres in area. It was first created in 1859 when the Electoral district of Evelyn and Mornington was abolished and split in two. The district of Mornington initially included the entire Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and French Island. Currently it includes Mornington, Mount Eliza, Mount Martha and Tuerong, and parts of Baxter and Moorooduc. Mornington has been held by the Liberal Party since it was re-created in 1985. Vin Heffernan
Vincent Patrick "Vin" Heffernan (24 December 1935 – 15 November 2002) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ivanhoe to William Francis Heffernan and Mary Ninoe, ''née'' Downing. He attended St Thomas Christian Brothers College in Clifton Hill before becoming a motor engineer, builder and property developer. From 1966 to 1984 he was a Heidelberg City Councillor (he was mayor from 1979 to 1980), and in 1983 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his work with youth. In 1985 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Liberal member for Ivanhoe. He was assistant to the Opposition Leader on Youth Affairs from 1985 to 1988 and Shadow Minister for Small Business from 1991 to 1992 before becoming Minister for Small Business and Minister Responsible for Youth Affairs in 1992. Tony Sheehan
Anthony John Sheehan (born 24 December 1948) is a former Australian politician. He obtained an economics degree at La Trobe University and was a school teacher at Heidelberg High School. He was elected branch secretary of the Victorian Secondary Teachers Association. He was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from the seat of Ivanhoe (1982–85) and Northcote (1988–98). He was a member of the ALP. He held a number of ministerial positions in the government of Joan Kirner. He was the Minister for Housing and Construction in 1990–91. He was then appointed the Minister for Finance in 1991–92 and Treasurer from January to October 1992 when the Kirner government was defeated. Electoral District Of Ivanhoe
The electoral district of Ivanhoe is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It is located in the north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne and includes the suburbs of Heidelberg, Ivanhoe, Rosanna and Macleod. Formed in 1945 the seat had usually been fairly safe for the Liberal Party having only been won by Labor at its 1952 and 1982 landslides before the 1990s. However a redistribution prior to the 1992 election made the seat notionally Labor. Liberal candidate Vin Heffernan was able to win at that election, only to be one of just three sitting Liberals defeated at the 1996 election. Labor's Craig Langdon held the seat comfortably until he resigned from the parliament on 25 August 2010, citing family and personal reasons, as well as "disloyalty and betrayal" from several of his colleagues. Jim Plowman
Sidney James Plowman (13 December 1934 – 3 May 2007) was an Australian politician. A Liberal Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, Plowman was Speaker of the Assembly on two occasions, from 1979 to 1982 and from 1996 to 1999. Early life Plowman was born in Melbourne to Dr Sidney Plowman of Frankston and his wife Marjorie. He was educated at Geelong Grammar School, after which he was an executive trainee at a civil engineering company in Melbourne. Maxwell John McDonald (18 April 1927 – 28 August 2019) was an Australian politician. He was born in Essendon, to RAAF officer Ewen McColl McDonald and Hilda Ferguson. He attended state and technical schools before becoming an electrical operations officer and electrician. The electoral district of Evelyn is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly covering the urban fringe north east of Melbourne. It was first proclaimed in 1859. The seat has shrunk considerably in size as the eastern suburbs of Melbourne grew. It now includes the suburbs and towns of Coldstream, Gruyere, Lilydale, and Wonga Park. The seat is usually safe for the Liberal Party but it was won by the Labor Party during their three landslide victories of 1952, 1982 and 2002. Ronald James Herbert "Ron" Wells (born 22 September 1935) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Cardiff, New South Wales, to Cecil Wells, a businessman, and Mildred, ''née'' Tombs. He received a Higher Diploma in Accounting (Honours) from the University of Western Sydney in 1954, a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) from Sydney University in 1959, a PhD from Cambridge University in 1964, and a Master of Veterinary Science from Melbourne University in 1970. He served in the RAAF from 1955 to 1956 and worked as a veterinarian in 1960 before going to Cambridge. David Hassett
David Lindsay Hassett (born 3 December 1947) is an Australian politician. He was born in Frankston to cabinet maker Edward John Hassett and Daphne Marie Hailwood. After attending local state schools, he became an officer with the Commonwealth Bank in 1966. On 10 December 1968, he married Denise Lesley Smith, with whom he had two children. They divorced in 2004, and Hassett married Vera Elizabeth Jones on 14 July 2005. Hassett was treasurer of the Labor Party's Flinders federal electorate assembly in 1977, and served as secretary of the Mornington party branch from 1978 to 1979.
