1985 Italian Open (tennis)
The 1985 Italian Open was a tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at the Foro Italico in Rome in Italy that was part of the 1985 Nabisco Grand Prix and of 1985 Virginia Slims World Championship Series. The men's tournament was held from 13 May through 18 May 1985, while the women's tournament was held from 4 May through 10 May 1985. Yannick Noah and Raffaella Reggi won the singles title. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. Vicki Nelson-Dunbar
Vicki Nelson-Dunbar (born September 25, 1962) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. During her career she won one top-level singles title (at São Paulo in 1986), and reached the fourth round of the US Open in 1982. Nelson-Dunbar holds the record for participating in the longest women's tennis match against Jean Hepner which lasted six hours and 31 minutes. This match also featured the longest rally in tennis history, a 643-shot rally that lasted 29 minutes. The game occurred on September 24, 1984, at a tournament in Richmond, Virginia. The Italian Open ( it, Internazionali d'Italia; literally: ''Italy's Internationals''), originally called the Italian International Championships, is a tennis tournament held in Rome, Italy. It is one of the most important clay tennis tournaments in the world with the men's competition being an ATP Tour Masters 1000 event on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour, and the women's competition being a WTA 1000 event on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour. The two events were combined in 2011. The tournament is played on clay courts, currently during the second week of May. 1985 Grand Prix (tennis)
The 1985 Nabisco Grand Prix was a professional men's tennis circuit held that year. It consisted of 71 tournaments held in 19 different countries. The tour incorporated the four ITF grand slam tournaments, three World Championship Tennis tournaments and the Grand Prix tournaments. Total prize money for the circuit was $23 million. The circuit was administered by the Men's International Professional Tennis Council (MIPTC). In November 1985 the MIPTC sued player–management agencies ProServ and IMG alleging that these firms were holding the tennis game hostage and were 'exerting extensive power over players'. The 1985 circuit marked the last time the Australian Open was held in November before moving to its current slot in January. Barbara Romanò (born 14 January 1965) is a former professional tennis player from Italy. Biography Romanò, who comes from Tuscany, began competing on tour in 1983 and reached a best singles ranking of 74 in the world. Her best performance in singles on the WTA Tour was a semi-final appearance at the 1989 Vitosha New Otani Open in Sofia and she twice reached the second round of the French Open. Patrizia Murgo (born 26 March 1962) is an Italian former professional tennis player. Tennis career Murgo, a native of Florence, was the first Italian to reach an Orange Bowl final when she finished runner-up to Kathy Horvath in 1979. Robert Seguso
Robert Arthur Seguso (born May 1, 1963) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. A doubles specialist, he won four Grand Slam men's doubles titles (two Wimbledon, one French Open and one US Open). He also won the men's doubles gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, partnering Ken Flach. Seguso reached the world no. 1 doubles ranking in 1985. Kenneth Eliot Flach (May 24, 1963 – March 12, 2018) was an American doubles world No. 1 tennis player. He won four Grand Slam men's doubles titles (two Wimbledon and two US Open), and two mixed doubles titles (Wimbledon and the French Open). Mats Arne Olof Wilander (; born 22 August 1964) is a Swedish former world No. 1 tennis player. From 1982 to 1988, he won seven major singles titles (three at the French Open, three at the Australian Open, and one at the US Open), and one major men's doubles title (at Wimbledon). Anders Per Järryd (; born 13 July 1961) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. During his career he won eight Grand Slam doubles titles (three French Open, two Wimbledon, two US Open, one Australian Open), reached the world No. 1 doubles ranking, and achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 5. Miloslav Mečíř
Miloslav Mečíř (; born 19 May 1964) is a Slovak former professional tennis player. He won the men's singles gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games, representing Czechoslovakia, and contested two major singles finals. In 1987 he won the WCT Finals, the season-ending championship for the World Championship Tennis tour. His son Miloslav Jr. is also a former professional tennis player. Career Mečíř was born in Bojnice, Czechoslovakia (now part of Slovakia).
