All England Open Badminton Championships
The All England Open Badminton Championships is the world's oldest badminton tournament, held annually in England. With the introduction of the BWF's latest grading system, it was given Super Series status in 2007, upgraded to Super Series Premier status in 2011. The world's first open tournament was held in the English town of Guildford in 1898, the success of which paved the way for the All England's inaugural edition, which was held at London's Horticultural Halls in 1899. Although the inaugural edition consisted of just the doubles format, the singles were introduced from the second edition onward. It was eventually considered – especially after the first Thomas Cup series in 1949 – the unofficial world championship of the sport until 1977, when the International Badminton Federation launched its official championships. Thomas Kihlström
Thomas Kihlström (born 11 December 1948) is a former badminton player from Sweden known for his agility, tactical astuteness, and coolness under pressure. Though an impressive singles player early in his career, his greatest successes came in doubles. Career Kihlström won the 1983 IBF World Championships in mixed doubles with Nora Perry. He also won 16 medals at the European Championships, two of them in men's singles, two in mixed doubles, five in men's doubles and 7 in team competition. He shared two All-England men's doubles titles, one with Bengt Fröman in 1976 and the other with Stefan Karlsson in 1983. Icuk Sugiarto (born 4 October 1962) is an Indonesian former badminton player. Career Largely a speed and power player, Sugiarto won the gold medal at the 1983 IBF World Championships, upsetting fellow countryman Liem Swie King in the final, and the bronze medal at the 1987 and 1989 IBF World Championships. He captured singles titles at the Indonesia (1982, 1986, 1988), Malaysia (1984), Thailand (1984, 1985), French (1988), and Hong Kong (1988) Opens; at the Badminton World Cup (1985, 1986); and at the Southeast Asian Games (three consecutive times) in 1985, 1987, and 1989. At nineteen, he shared the 1982 Asian Games men's doubles title with doubles maestro Christian Hadinata. Xiong Guobao (born 1 November 1962) is a former elite level badminton player from China who won numerous international singles titles in the late 1980s. Career Noted for his solid, consistent play, Xiong rarely suffered lopsided defeats. His titles included the United States (1984), Japan (1987), Hong Kong (1987), Malaysian (1988, 1989), Thailand (1988), French (1989), Swedish (1988), and Indonesian (1989) Opens. He also won the (now defunct) season ending World Badminton Grand Prix tourney in 1987 and in 1989. Ong Beng Teong
Ong Beng Teong (Chinese: 王明忠; born 29 May 1962) is a former badminton player from Malaysia. Career Ong won the gold medal at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in the men's doubles together with Razif Sidek. In the 1988 Thomas Cup he represented Malaysia and reached with the team the final of the cup. In the final he played the men's doubles with Cheah Soon Kit and lost with him to the Chinese pair Chen Kang and Chen Hongyong 12-15 and 12–15. Prakash Padukone
Prakash Padukone (born 10 June 1955) is a former Indian badminton player. He was ranked World No. 1 in 1980; the same year he became the first Indian to win the All England Open Badminton Championships. He was awarded the Arjuna award in 1972 and the Padma Shri in 1982 by the Government of India. He is one of the co-founders of Olympic Gold Quest, a foundation dedicated to the promotion of Olympic sports in India. Early life Padukone was born on 10 June 1955 in Bangalore in Karnataka. Stephen John Baddeley (born 1961) is a retired male badminton player from England who competed from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. Badminton career Baddeley won the English men's singles title in 1982, 1985, and 1987. He is the only Englishman to win men's singles at the quadrennial British Commonwealth Games and one of only two to win the gold medal in men's singles at the biennial European Badminton Championships (1990). Yang Yang (; born December 8, 1963 in Nanjing, Jiangsu) is a former Chinese badminton player. He is one of the four badminton players in the world to have won two World Badminton Championships men's singles titles consecutively (1987, 1989), the others being Lin Dan, Chen Long, Kento Momota and Viktor Axelsen. He also won the men's singles gold medal when badminton was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
