1983 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships
The 1983 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Tampere, Finland for the second time. The Finnish city had host the championships previously in 1973. The men's competition consisted of six Canadian (single paddle, open boat) and nine kayak events. Three events were held for the women, all in kayak. This was the eighteenth championships in canoe sprint. Rüdiger Helm (, ; born in Neubrandenburg on 6 October 1956) was an East German sprint canoeist who competed from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won six medals which included three golds (1976: K-1 1000 m, 1980: K-1 1000 m, K-4 1000 m) and three bronzes (1976: K-1 500 m, K-4 1000 m; 1980: K-2 500 m). Andreas Stähle (born 14 February 1965) is an East German sprint canoer who competed from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. He won two medals at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul with a silver in the K-1 500 m and a bronze in the K-4 1000 m events. Ian Ferguson (canoeist)
Ian Gordon Ferguson (born 20 July 1952) is New Zealand's second most successful Olympian. He won four Olympic gold medals competing in K1, K2, and K4 kayak events, and attended five Summer Olympics between 1976 and 1992. He also won two canoe sprint world championship titles. Early life and family Ferguson was born in Taumarunui on 20 July 1952, the son of Gilbert and Winsome Ferguson. He was educated at Palmerston North Boys' High School, and was an all-round sportsperson, achieving in running and rugby union, and becoming the school swimming champion. Ferguson studied at Victoria University of Wellington, completing a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration degree in 1976. Vladimir Vladimirovich Parfenovich ( be, Уладзімір Парфяновіч; russian: Владимир Владимирович Парфенович, ; born 2 December 1958) is a retired Belarusian sprint canoer and politician. Sport Parfenovich competed for the Soviet Union at the Moscow Olympics and became the first canoer to win all three events he entered: K-1 500 m, K-2 500 m and K-2 1000 m. He also won twelve medals at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, with nine golds (K-1 500 m: 1979, 1981–1983; K-2 500 m: 1979, 1981, 1982; K-2 1000 m: 1981, 1982) and three silvers (K-1 500 m: 1978, K-2 500 m: 1983, K-2 1000 m: 1983). Tamás Buday (born 5 July 1952) is a Canadian sprint canoe coach and retired Hungarian canoe sprinter. He competed in doubles at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics and won two bronze medals in 1976.
