1982 New Zealand Māori Rugby Union Tour Of Wales And Spain
The 1982 New Zealand Māori rugby union tour of Wales and Spain was a series of eight matches played by the Māori All Blacks (then known as the New Zealand Māori team) in Wales in October and November 1982. The Māori played eight games of which they won four, lost three and drew one. Six of the games were played against Welsh club or county sides while the one was played against the Wales national rugby union team, although Wales did not award full international caps for the match. Māori All Blacks
The Māori All Blacks, previously called the New Zealand Maori, New Zealand Maoris and New Zealand Natives, are a rugby union team from New Zealand. They are a representative team of the New Zealand Rugby Union, and a prerequisite for playing is that the player has Māori whakapapa (genealogy). In the past this rule was not strictly applied; non–Māori players who looked Māori were often selected in the team. These included a few Pacific island players and a couple of African descent. Today all players have their ancestry verified before selection in the team. The team's first match was in 1888 against Hawke's Bay. This was followed by a tour of Europe in 1888 and 1889 where the team played their first games against national teams, beating Ireland in Dublin before losing to Wales and England. Aberavon RFC ( cy, Clwb Rygbi Aberafan) is a rugby union club located in the Welsh town of Port Talbot, though the club's name refers to the older settlement of Aberavon which lies on the western side of the town. Paul Quinn (New Zealand Politician)
Bernard Paul Quinn (born 5 May 1951) is a New Zealand businessman, former rugby union player and politician, and a member of the National Party. He was elected into the 49th New Zealand Parliament in 2008 by way of the party list and served for one term until 2011. In 2013, he had the option of returning to Parliament following the resignation of MP Jackie Blue as he was the highest ranked person on the party list, but he declined the opportunity, instead making way for Paul Foster-Bell. Early life and education Quinn was born on 5 May 1951, and was educated at St Joseph's College in Masterton. He went on to study at Lincoln College, graduating with a Bachelor of Agricultural Commerce in 1973. Of Māori descent, Quinn affiliates to Ngāti Awa and Ngāi Tūhoe. Percy Erceg
Charles Percy Erceg (28 November 1928 – 26 May 2019) was a New Zealand rugby union player. A wing three-quarter, Erceg represented North Auckland and at a provincial level, and was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, from 1951 to 1952. He played nine matches for the All Blacks including four internationals. Affiliating to Ngāti Kurī, Erceg represented New Zealand Māori from 1950 to 1952, and in 1951 he was awarded the Tom French Cup as the Māori player of the year. He later served as a national Māori selector from 1972 to 1983, was the manager of the New Zealand Māori side that toured Australia and the Pacific Islands in 1979 and coach of the 1982 team that toured Wales. Waka Nathan
Waka Joseph Nathan (8 July 1940 – 24 September 2021) was a New Zealand rugby union player who played rugby union for the New Zealand national team (the "All Blacks") as a flanker. His feats on the field gained him the nickname "The Black Panther". Early life Nathan was born in Auckland on 8 July 1940. He was one of nine children of Samuel Taia Nathan and Irene Huakore (née Randall). He attended Mangere Central Primary School and Otahuhu College. Nathan's whakapapa included Ngāpuhi, Te Roroa and Waikato Tainui. Nathan first played rugby as a child for his primary school and secondary school. He played a notable match against Seddon Memorial Technical College during a curtain raiser to the 1956 Test match between New Zealand and Australia at Eden Park, together with his friend Mack Herewini.
