1979 Victorian State Election
The 1979 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 5 May 1979, was for the 48th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect 81 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. The incumbent Liberal government led by Rupert Hamer was returned with a significantly reduced majority. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. History Victoria was proclaimed a Colony on 1 July 1851 separating from the Colony of New South Wales by an act of the British Parliament. The Legislative Assembly was created on 13 March 1856 with the passing of the ''Victorian Electoral Bill'', five years after the creation of the original unicameral Legislative Council. Gordon Hockley
Gordon Stanley Hockley (24 July 1926 – 11 May 2002) was an Australian politician. He was born in Albury to motor mechanic Stanley Bertram Hockley and nurse Frances McIntosh. He attended local state schools and became a clerk with Victorian Railways in Melbourne from 1942 to 1945, before serving with the Royal Australian Navy from 1945 to 1972. He was a cook attached to an admiral's staff with the Commonwealth Occupation Forces in Japan, and then a lieutenant in charge of catering training. On 17 October 1947 he married Joyce Eileen Carne; they had four sons. On his return he was a lieutenant in the Royal Australian Navy Emergency Reserve, and a catering manager at Royal Southern Memorial Hospital in Caulfield from 1972 to 1979. Gerard Vaughan (Australian Politician)
Gerard Marshall Vaughan (born 1 December 1946) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Glen Huntly to David Arthur Vaughan and Mary Therese, ''née'' Russell. He attended state and Catholic schools and received an Associate Diploma of Chemical Engineering from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1966. He worked as a chemical engineer with Australian Portland Cement Ltd. from 1967 to 1968, when he received a Bachelor of Education (Honours) from Monash University, followed by a Master of Engineering Science in 1971. He received a Diploma of Education from the State College of Victoria in 1973 and a PhD from Monash University in 1978. Joe Rafferty (politician)
Joseph Anstice Rafferty (10 January 1911 – 14 June 2000) was an Australian politician. He was born in Launceston in Tasmania, the son of schoolteacher Col. R. A. Rafferty and Sarah Rose Anne Plummer. He was educated locally at both state and private schools and entered the public service in 1930. On 8 June 1940 he married Miriam Kathleen Richards, with whom he had two sons. He studied at the University of Tasmania, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1941. He had moved to Melbourne in 1940, where he studied law at the University of Melbourne. From 1945 he was personnel manager for Australian National Airways. Graham Ernst
Graham Keith Ernst (born 16 March 1940) is a former Australian trade unionist and politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Parliament of Victoria from 1979 to 1992. Biography Ernst was born in Yorketown, South Australia, to Frederick Ernst, a farmer, and Leta Grace Bittner. He attended state schools in Cranbrook and Portland before becoming a fitter and turner at the Portland Superphosphate Works, where he was elected as shop steward for the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union (AMWU). He also worked as the manager of a bakery and operated an engineering workshop in Portland. Heavily involved in the union movement, Ernst was founding junior vice-president of the South West Trades and Labour Council and president of the local branch of the AMWU. In 1973 Ernst moved to Geelong where he became president of the Geelong branch of the AMWU (now renamed the Amalgamated Metal Workers and Shipwrights Union) and junior vice-president of the Geelong Trades Hall Council. Phillip Archibald Gude (born 2 June 1941) is a former Victorian politician. From 1991 to 1999 he was deputy leader of the Victorian Liberal Party. Business career Gude was born in Geelong to Archibald Gilby, small business owner, and Mavis Murfett. His education was at Geelong High School and the Gordon Institute of TAFE. His business career commenced in 1960 with the Shell Oil Company as a trainee 1960–53, and proceeded to Blakistons Ltd as an accountant 1963–64, and the Ford Motor Company as an industrial relations officer 1964–67. Barry John Rowe (born 15 October 1945) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Melbourne, and attended St Bernard's College in Moonee Ponds and then Monash University, where he received a Bachelor of Economics, and Hawthorn State College, where he received a Diploma of Education. He worked as a personnel officer, and joined the Labor Party in 1969, becoming president of the Moonee Ponds and Strathmore branches. Kenneth Wheeler (politician)
Sir Kenneth Henry Wheeler (7 September 1912 – 10 May 1996) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mernda to farmer William Henry Wheeler and Alma Nellie Bodycoat. He worked on his father's farm from the age of thirteen, and then became a retail dairyman at Coburg in 1934. On 24 January 1934, he married Hazel Jean Collins, with whom he had two children. In 1950, he amalgamated his business with Croft Dairies, to form Metropolitan Dairies, of which he became manager in 1959. A Liberal Party member, he served on Coburg City Council from 1950 to 1959 and was mayor from 1955 to 1956. In 1958, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Essendon. Electoral District Of Essendon
The electoral district of Essendon is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was first created in 1904 after the abolition of the larger Essendon and Flemington electorate, and covers some of the north-western suburbs of Melbourne, including Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale. The electorate was abolished in 1955, and Ascot Vale created, but in 1958, Ascot Vale was abolished and Essendon re-created. Essendon was held by the Liberals during the Bolte and Hamer governments, usually due to preferences from the Democratic Labor Party. The Liberals also won the seat after the Kennett landslide of 1992. Nowadays, the electorate lies within the Labor heartland of western and northern Melbourne, and is considered to be a relatively safe seat for Labor.
