Municipal elections were held on November 13, 1978 in the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton (RMOC), Ontario, Canada. Marianne Wilkinson
Marianne Margaret Wilkinson () is a Canadian local politician and ex-Councillor for Kanata North (Ward 4) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Career Wilkinson was born in Ottawa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vivian Francis Rowe Berton. The family moved to Calgary when she was nine, but returned 9 years later. She finished high school at Glebe Collegiate Institute. After high school, she graduated in Geography from Trinity College, University of Toronto. After university, she began her career as a high school teacher. The family moved to Kanata in 1968 where she immediately joined the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association. Doug Thompson
Douglas Thompson was a councillor in the city of Ottawa for the Osgoode Ward. Thompson was also the former mayor of Osgoode Township prior to the amalgamation with the new City of Ottawa. Prior to being mayor of Osgoode, Thompson was a municipal councillor in the township for 14 years. Prior to entering politics, Thompson was a teacher for 35 years before retiring. He lives in the community of Greely where he has lived since 1967. He has coached minor hockey and baseball. He graduated from Carleton University, with a degree in History and Political Science. Osgoode Township, Ontario
Osgoode Township is a former township that is now a part of the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The township along the Rideau River was established in 1798 and incorporated in 1850. It was an independent township in Carleton County, Ontario, Carleton County until its amalgamation with the city in 2001. It remains a largely rural area with only some 23,285 inhabitants as of the 2016 census. As of the Canada 2021 Census, this had increased to 24,199. Frank Reid (Canadian Football)
Clifford Frank Reid (February 11, 1946–October 20, 2022) was a Canadian football player and politician. He played for the Ottawa Rough Riders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and played college football at the University at Buffalo. After his football career, he spent 11 years on Nepean City Council, including six years as a member of the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Council. The son of Clifford and Kathleen Reid, Frank Reid moved to Ottawa at the age of 12, and attended Fisher Park High School. Beryl Gaffney
Beryl Gaffney (born April 1, 1930) is a Canadian former politician and public servant. She served as a city councillor in Nepean, Ontario from 1978 to 1988 serving concurrently on the council of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. Born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, she was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as the Liberal MP for Nepean in the 1988 federal election and was re-elected in 1993 and served as chair of the Standing Committee on Human Rights and the Status of Disabled Persons from 1994 to 1996. During this period she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and, after successful surgery, was able to return to the House of Commons to resume her valuable contribution to health issues. Ben Franklin (Canadian Politician)
Ben Franklin (1942–March 22, 2003) was mayor of the city of Nepean, Ontario from the 1978 municipal election to 1997. Nepean became part of the city of Ottawa in 2001. He was born in Elgin, Ontario in 1942. He graduated from Carleton University with a BA in 1971 and became a high school geography teacher. In 1973, he was elected to Nepean council. In 1975, he ran unsuccessfully as the Liberal candidate in the riding of Carleton in the Ontario general election. As mayor, Franklin established a "pay as you go" policy which brought the city out of debt. He retired in 1997 due to health problems. His executive assistant, Mary Pitt, succeeded him as mayor of Nepean after running a campaign that promised to simply continue Franklin's vision. He received an artificial heart in March 2003 but died of heart failure later that month at the age of 60. Nepean, Ontario
Nepean ( ) is a former municipality and now geographic area of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Located west of Ottawa's inner core, it was an independent city until amalgamated with the Regional Municipality of Ottawa–Carleton in 2001 to become the new city of Ottawa. However, the name Nepean continues in common usage in reference to the area. The population of Nepean is about 186,593 people (2021 Census). Although the neighbouring municipality of Kanata, Ontario, Kanata formed the entrepreneurial and high tech centre of the region, Nepean hosted noted industries such as Nortel Networks, JDS Uniphase and Gandalf Technologies. Bridlewood, Ottawa
Bridlewood is a neighbourhood in Kanata South Ward in the western part of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Bridlewood was part of the Township of Nepean until 1978, and then part of the City of Kanata until 2001, when that city amalgamated with the City of Ottawa. Location According to the Bridlewood Community Association, the neighbourhood is located east of Eagleson Road, south and west of the National Capital Commission Greenbelt, and north of Hope Side Road. As of the 2016 Canada Census, this area had a population of 24,400.
