1976 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1976 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 31st edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. England's Peter Collins became the first British World Speedway Champion since Peter Craven had won in 1962. Fellow Englishman Malcolm Simmons finished second with Australia's Phil Crump finishing third. 1976 was the first time since 1952 that no rider from either New Zealand or Sweden finished on the podium in the World Final. Individual Speedway World Championship
The World Championship of Speedway is an international competition between the highest-ranked motorcycle speedway riders of the world, run under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The first official championships were held in 1936. Today, this official FIM championship is organised as a series of Speedway Grand Prix events, where points are awarded according to performance in the event and tallied up at the end of each season. However, up to 1994, it was run as a single-night event after qualifying rounds during the season, leading up to a big final of 20 heats, where points were awarded according to riders' heat placings and then tallied up at the end. Ted Hubbard
Edward Raymond Hubbard nicknamed "Hurricane Hubbard" (born in Lydden, England) was a motorcycle speedway rider in National League (speedway) and British League. Paul Tyrer
Paul David Tyrer (born 5 December 1952) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned one international cap for the England national speedway team. Biography Tyrer, born in Manchester, began his British leagues career riding for Rochdale Hornets during the 1970 British League Division Two season. The following season in 1971, he improved his league average to 8.71 in just his second season of racing. He began to appear for Belle Vue Aces in the top league in 1972 and contributed towards their league and cup double winning season, although he spent most of the season with Ellesmere Port Gunners, where he topped the averages for his team. He spent the next four years at Belle Vue, winning the 1973 and 1975 Knockout Cups before signing for King's Lynn Stars in 1977 and winning a fourth Knockout Cup title. Alan Grahame
Alan William Grahame (5 February 1954 – 3 October 2021) was a British motorcycle speedway rider. Career Grahame was born at Kingstanding, Birmingham, in February 1954. He finished runner-up to his brother Andy Grahame in the 1982 British Speedway Championship, and qualified for the Speedway World Championship Final in 1984 as reserve and scored five points from two rides. During the final season of his career in 1994, he helped the Oxford Cheetahs win the Fours Championship during the 1994 British League Division Two season. He died at the age of 67 on 3 October 2021, from injuries sustained in a motocross racing crash the previous month. Trevor Geer
Trevor Geer is a former motorcycle speedway rider, active in the 1970s and 1980s. Career Geer raced for the Eastbourne Eagles in the early seventies, before transferring to the Oxford Rebels. He and Ole Olsen came second in the Radio Oxford Best Pairs in 1974. He started his full-time British League career with Oxford in 1975 and was part of the Midland Cup winning team. Barney Kennett
Brian 'Barney' Kennett (born 1955) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England, who raced in the British National League. Born in Orpington, he is part of a speedway family which includes brothers Gordon Kennett and Dave Kennett, and nephew Edward Kennett. Career Kennett was the longest serving rider for the Canterbury Crusaders (speedway), riding from 1971 to 1984. In 1973, Kennett was runner-up to Peter Collins (speedway rider) in the British Under 21 Speedway Championship. The same year he became the most expensive Division Two rider in a transfer deal. Bob Coles
Robert John Coles (born 12 February 1944) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned one international cap for the England national speedway team. Biography Coles first rode in the British speedway leagues for Plymouth Devils during the 1968 British League Division Two season. However, he was not a regular starter for the south west team until the following season in 1969. In 1970, Plymouth dropped out of the league, so Coles switched to rival club Exeter Falcons in the British League (the highest division of the United Kingdom at the time). While at Exeter in 1971, he doubled up with Romford Bombers in division 2 and recorded an average of 8.06. However, his season was curtailed by an accident that saw him break his leg. Laurie Etheridge
Laurie Etheridge (born 12 September 1948 in Pulborough, England) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned one international cap for the England national speedway team. Career His first attempt at speedway, in 1963, was thwarted when his bike was stolen and he did not resume the sport until 1966. In 1967, he signed for Exeter Falcons and managed three appearances for them in that season. His career really started the following year, when he was signed up for Hackney Hawks by Len Silver and their partner team Rayleigh Rockets. A good season for Rayleigh resulted in a full-time contract for Hackney. He was a Crayford Kestrels regular for eight years from 1975, achieving nearly 300 league and cup appearances as a Kestrel.
