Paul Tyrer
Paul David Tyrer (born 5 December 1952) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned one international cap for the England national speedway team. Biography Tyrer, born in Manchester, began his British leagues career riding for Rochdale Hornets during the 1970 British League Division Two season. The following season in 1971, he improved his league average to 8.71 in just his second season of racing. He began to appear for Belle Vue Aces in the top league in 1972 and contributed towards their league and cup double winning season, although he spent most of the season with Ellesmere Port Gunners, where he topped the averages for his team. He spent the next four years at Belle Vue, winning the 1973 and 1975 Knockout Cups before signing for King's Lynn Stars in 1977 and winning a fourth Knockout Cup title. Rochdale Hornets (speedway)
The Rochdale Hornets were a British speedway team from Rochdale in the north west of England. History They were founded in 1928 and competed in the inaugural season of British Speedway in 1929 but closed in 1930. In 1970, they were reformed by the promotion from the Belle Vue Aces to give their junior riders a chance to progress when they moved their Belle Vue Colts team to the stadium under the control of Dent Oliver. The team arrived in 1970 but moved on to Ellesmere Port at the end of the 1971 season. The track was not a good shape and proved to be unpopular with supporters. The safety fence was unusual in that it was made of steel plates supported on wire ropes. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. 1970 British League Division Two Season
The 1970 British League Division Two season was the third season of second tier motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Team changes The league expanded from 16 to 17 teams in its third season. Plymouth Devils dropped out but two new teams had been created and joined the league, they were the Workington Comets and Peterborough Panthers. Before the season got underway the 1968 and 1969 champions Belle Vue Colts disbanded with most of their riders and the promotion team moving to Rochdale and becoming the Rochdale Hornets. Doncaster changed their nickname from Stallions to Dragons. Summary Two teams changed venue during the season. In July, the Nelson Admirals moved Bradford to become Bradford Northern and in August, the King's Lynn Starlets promotion moved to Boston and became the Boston Barracudas. The Belle Vue Aces are a British motorcycle speedway, speedway club, based in Manchester. The club hold the record of having won the top tier List of United Kingdom speedway league champions, League championship 13 times. They currently compete in the SGB Premiership, racing at The National Speedway Stadium, with home matches usually taking place on Monday evenings. They also run a second team in the National League (speedway), National Development League, known as the Belle Vue Colts. History Racing first took place in 1928 at the Belle Vue (greyhound racing), Belle Vue greyhound stadium in Kirkmanshulme Lane before moving the following year to a specially built Hyde Road (speedway), stadium nearby on Hyde Road. The Great Britain Speedway Team (also known as GB Speedway Team) is one of the major teams in international speedway. The team is managed by former Great Britain riders Oliver Allen and Simon Stead, and captained by the 2018 Speedway World Champion Tai Woffinden. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand).
