1976 Davis Cup Americas Zone
The Americas Zone was one of the three regional zones of the 1976 Davis Cup. This year's tournament saw all teams in the Americas Zone competing in one single bracket, with the previous North & Central America and South America sub-zones, and subsequently the Americas Inter-Zonal final, being eliminated. This brought the Americas Zone in line with the outline of the other zones, with the previous year's Americas sub-zone champions progressing to the new Americas main draw semifinals. 14 teams entered the Americas Zone in total, with 12 teams competing in the preliminary rounds to advance to the main draw and join the previous year's finalists South Africa and Chile. The winner of the main draw went on to compete in the Inter-Zonal Zone against the winners of the Eastern Zone and Europe Zone. The 1976 Davis Cup was the 65th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 58 teams would enter the competition, 32 in the Europe Zone, 14 in the Americas Zone, and 12 in the Eastern Zone. Luis Baraldi
Luis Fernando Baraldi Briseño (born 21 October 1951) is a Mexican former professional tennis player. Born in Mexico City, Baraldi won Mexico's junior championship in 1969 and played collegiate tennis for Lamar University from 1970 to 1973. He was a member of Lamar University's 1973 Southland Conference championship side. Following his collegiate tennis career he competed on the professional tour, making doubles main draw appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon Championships. He was ranked as high as number two nationally and had a best word ranking of 323. Between 1973 and 1976 he played seven Davis Cup rubbers for Mexico and won five national doubles championships over the course of his career. Javier Restrepo
Javier Restrepo (born 14 February 1953) is a Colombian former professional tennis player. Born and raised in Medellín, Restrepo was a left-handed player and reached a career best singles world ranking of 203, while also featuring in four Davis Cup ties for Colombia. Restrepo made his only grand slam main draw appearance at the 1981 French Open and had a win in qualifying over Mats Wilander, who the following year would claim the title. Réjean Genois (born December 30, 1952) is a former professional and Davis Cup tennis player from Quebec City. Genois was the top-ranked Canadian singles player during 1978 and 1979. His career high ranking of World No. 89 was the highest grand prix tour computer ranking for a Canadian until Glenn Michibata reached World No. 79 in 1984. Collegiate tennis Genois played tennis at Florida State University from 1972 until 1974. Álvaro Betancur
Álvaro Betancur (born 3 January 1950) is a Colombian former professional tennis player. Based in Florida, Betancur comes from Medellin originally and featured in seven Davis Cup ties for Colombia during the 1970s. He played in Colombia's Inter-Zonal Final against eventual tournament winners South Africa in 1974 and won a dead rubber singles over Byron Bertram. His Davis Cup career also included a 1979 tie against the United States in Cleveland, where he lost singles matches to John McEnroe and Dick Stockton. While competing on the professional tour he reached a best singles ranking of 68 in the world. He twice made the second round of the US Open, with wins over Billy Martin and Nick Saviano, in 1975 and 1978 respectively. Dale Power (born October 2, 1949) is a former top-ranked Canadian tennis player. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Power held the best singles Davis Cup record by winning percentage (6–2) of any Canadian player. Power also has the distinction of having played in the longest set in Davis Cup history, a second set that was won by Colombian Álvaro Betancourt 24-22 in a match won by Power in 5 sets in a 1976 tie. Power was the top-ranked player in Canada for 10 of 12 years, winning the Canadian Closed Championship for singles 7 times. He failed however to win a single top-tier (grand prix) professional tour match, going 0-11. His highest singles ranking was World No. 210, achieved in June, 1976. Anthony "Tony" Bardsley (born February 9, 1945, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec) is a former top-ranking Canadian tennis player from Vancouver. He competed on the nascent professional tennis tours (Grand Prix tour and World Championship Tennis) as well as in Davis Cup for Canada. Early tennis Bardsley went to California to pursue tennis, attending Diablo Valley College in 1963 and 1964. He returned to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia in 1965 and by 1967 he was British Columbia's top-ranked player. Alan Price (born 19 April 1942) is an English musician who first found prominence as the original keyboardist of the English rock band the Animals. He left the band in 1965 to form the Alan Price Set; his hit singles with and without the group include "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear", " The House That Jack Built", "Rosetta" (with Georgie Fame) and "Jarrow Song". Adolfo González
Adolfo González (born 8 January 1952) is a former tennis player from Mexico. Biography González won medals in all three tennis events at the 1975 Pan American Games, including a silver in the men's singles. He also came second in the men's doubles with Raúl Contreras and won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles partnering Alejandra Vallejo. During Mexico's 1976 Davis Cup campaign, González featured in a tie against the Caribbean team at home in Mexico City. Roberto Chávez is a Mexican former professional tennis player. Chávez reached a career high ranking of 172 in the world while competing on the professional tour in the 1970s. At the 1973 Wimbledon Championships, Chávez came from two sets down to win his first round match against Ionel Sânteiu. His best performance on tour came at Mexico City in 1978, where he beat John Alexander en route to the quarter-finals.
