Álvaro Betancur
Álvaro Betancur (born 3 January 1950) is a Colombian former professional tennis player. Based in Florida, Betancur comes from Medellin originally and featured in seven Davis Cup ties for Colombia during the 1970s. He played in Colombia's Inter-Zonal Final against eventual tournament winners South Africa in 1974 and won a dead rubber singles over Byron Bertram. His Davis Cup career also included a 1979 tie against the United States in Cleveland, where he lost singles matches to John McEnroe and Dick Stockton. While competing on the professional tour he reached a best singles ranking of 68 in the world. He twice made the second round of the US Open, with wins over Billy Martin and Nick Saviano, in 1975 and 1978 respectively. Dick Stockton (tennis)
Richard "Dick" LaClede Stockton (born February 18, 1951) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. In addition to his playing career, he was the head coach of the men's tennis team at the University of Virginia. for three years, from 1998-2001. Stockton also served as the Head Men's Tennis Coach at Piedmont College in Demorest, GA from 2018-2021. Stockton's highest world ranking was world No. 8. He reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 1974, the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in 1976 and 1977 and the semifinals in the 1978 French Open. The Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent. Background Before the Open Era, popular professional tennis players, such as Suzanne Lenglen and Vincent Richards, were contracted to professional promoters. Amateur players were under the jurisdiction of their national (and international) federations. Later professional promoters, such as Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, often convinced leading amateurs like Pancho Gonzales and Rod Laver to join their tours with promises of good prize money. Nick Saviano (born June 5, 1956) is an American former tennis player and subsequent tennis coach. Career Saviano won one singles title during his career as a pro (1983 Lorraine Open). Billy Martin (born December 25, 1956) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. During his career, he won the NCAA Singles Title in 1975, defeating George Hardie, and one singles title and three doubles titles on the Pro Tour. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 32 in 1975. Martin currently serves as the head coach for the UCLA Bruins men's tennis team, a position he has held since 1994. The US Open Tennis Championships is a hardcourt tennis tournament held annually in Queens, New York.
