1973 PGA Tour Qualifying School Graduates
This is a list of the 1973 PGA Tour Qualifying School graduates. Tournament summary The tournament returned to a 144-hole final. After three 72-hole regional qualifiers, there were 78 players in the final field. The first four rounds were played at Perdido Bay Country Club in Pensacola, Florida in mid-October and the final four at Dunes Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina the following week. They changed courses because the tour was attempting to prepare participants what week-to-week life would be like if they graduated onto the PGA Tour. Ben Crenshaw won the event by 12 strokes. Recently one of the leading amateurs in the country, Crenshaw "gave more credence to projections that he would become golf's next dominating player." Terry Diehl
Terry J. Diehl (born November 9, 1949) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour from 1973 to 1983. Diehl was born and raised in Rochester, New York. At the age of 15, he won the international long drive competition when he hit a ball 340 yards. He attended the University of Georgia from 1968 to 1971 and was a member of the golf team, an All-American in 1969. Diehl had more than 20 top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events including a win at the 1974 San Antonio Texas Open; he shot a 19-under-par 269 and won by one stroke over Mike Hill. He finished solo second to Lee Trevino at the same tournament in 1980. Diehl finished the 1976 IVB-Bicentennial Golf Classic tied for first in regulation; however, he lost that tournament to Tom Kite on the fifth extra hole of a playoff handing Kite his first of 19 PGA Tour wins. Larry Nelson
Larry Gene Nelson (born September 10, 1947) is an American professional golfer who has won numerous tournaments at both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour level. Nelson was born in Fort Payne, Alabama and grew up in Acworth, Georgia, northwest of Atlanta. He did not play the game as a child – atypical for a successful professional golfer – in high school he focused on basketball and baseball. Nelson took up golf at the age of 21, after he returned from serving in the infantry in Vietnam (Nelson was a 20-year-old newlywed when he was drafted into the U.S. Army). Nelson was first introduced to golf by Ken Hummel, a soldier and friend in his infantry unit, and Nelson carefully studied Ben Hogan's book ''The Five Fundamentals of Golf'' while learning how to play the game. Bobby Walzel
Robert Morris Walzel (born September 26, 1949) is an American professional golfer. Walzel was born in Houston, Texas. He played college golf at the University of Houston where he was on the teams that won back-to-back NCAA Division I Championships in 1969 and 1970. He turned professional in 1973. Walzel played on the PGA Tour from 1974 to 1981. His best finishes were two third places in 1977: at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and at the Tallahassee Open. He did win the 1979 Magnolia State Classic, a PGA Tour-sponsored "satellite" event played opposite the Masters Tournament. His best finish in a major was a T-8 at the 1980 PGA Championship. Lyn Lott
Clinton Lynwood Lott III (April 9, 1950 – March 22, 2018) was an American professional golfer. Lott was born in Douglas, Georgia. He won several amateur golf tournaments in Georgia including the Georgia State Junior Amateur, Georgia State Amateur, and Georgia Open, as a 17-year-old amateur. He played college golf at the University of Georgia where he was a two-time All-American. During his time at UGA, the team won four consecutive Southeastern Conference titles and Lott won two individual events. Lott played on the PGA Tour from 1974 to 1984. His best finishes were three third-place finishes: 3rd at the 1976 Canadian Open, T-3 at the 1977 Byron Nelson Golf Classic, and T-3 at the 1981 Greater Milwaukee Open. He twice finished in the top-10 in a major: T-7 at the 1977 U.S. Open and T-8 at the 1976 U.S. Open. Eddie Pearce
Eddie Pearce (born March 16, 1952) is an American professional golfer. Pearce was born in Fort Myers, Florida and grew up in Temple Terrace, Florida, where, as an infant, his first golf club was placed in his hands by the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias. By the time he was 12, he was shooting in the 60s and was featured as a child prodigy in Professional Golfer Magazine. He attended C. Leon King High School in nearby Tampa, Florida and was on the same high school golf team as PGA Tour veteran Gary Koch. As an amateur, Pearce won the Florida Boys Junior Championship for his age division in three straight years (1964–1966). He also won his age division at the "Future Masters" Tournament in seven straight years (1963–1969). Monroe Invitational
The Monroe Invitational Championship is an annual amateur golf tournament in the United States, played since 1937 at Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford, New York, a suburb southeast of Rochester. Originally a match play event, it switched to 72-hole stroke play format in 1998. The MIC is a "category B" tournament in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, meaning it is one of the top 100 men's amateur tournaments in the world. The course at Monroe Golf Club opened in 1924 and was designed by Donald Ross. Nick Palladino won the 2013 event in a playoff. Due to rain, the event had been shortened to 54 holes.
