1972 VFA Season
The 1972 Victorian Football Association season was the 91st season of the top division of the Australian rules football competition, and the twelfth season of second division competition. The Division 1 premiership was won by the Oakleigh Football Club, after it defeated Dandenong in the Grand Final on 24 September by 44 points; it was Oakleigh's sixth and final Division 1 premiership. The Division 2 premiership was won by Geelong West, which went undefeated through the season with an overall record of 20–0, becoming the first team since in 1918 to complete a perfect season; overall, it was the club's third Division 2 premiership. Division 1 The Division 1 home-and-away season was played over 18 rounds; the top four then contested the finals under the Page–McIntyre system. The finals were played at the St Kilda Cricket Ground. Oakleigh Football Club
Oakleigh Football Club, nicknamed the Devils, was an Australian rules football club from Oakleigh which played in the VFA from 1929 until 1994. Oakleigh wore purple guernseys with a gold monogram thus giving them their original nickname the Purple and Golds. History The club was formed in 1891 and after having success in the Melbourne Districts Association (premierships in 1907, 1924, & 1928), they were one of two teams admitted into the VFA in 1929, the other being Sandringham. With former Essendon star player and coach, and future Fitzroy and Carlton coach Frank Maher in charge they won a premiership in just their second season with a 9-point win over Northcote in a very spiteful game, 9.6 (60) to 7.9 (51). Prahran Football Club
Prahran Assumption Football Club (), nicknamed The Two Blues, is an Australian rules football club based at Toorak Park in Orrong Road between High Street and Malvern Road, Armadale, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The club is currently in Division 1 of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Brunswick Football Club
Brunswick Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football League, Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1897 until 1991. Based in Brunswick, Victoria, for most of their time in the Association they were known as the Magpies, and wore black and white guernseys. In its final two seasons in the VFA, it was known as Brunswick-Broadmeadows. History Brunswick Football Club was formed in 1865 and joined the VFA in the 1897 season. Caulfield Football Club
Caulfield Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association, VFA from 1965 until 1987 when due to financial difficulties the club folded. History Origins The Camden Town Football Club was based in the South Caulfield area and had been in existence from at least 1898. In 1910 they entered a side in the Federal Football Association Junior competition. They won the premiership in 1911. Play was suspended for the World War I. After the war the club resumed and changed its name to South Caulfield and joined the VJFA. In 1922 the club won lower grade premiership. In 1926 until 1940 the club competed in the Victorian Amateur Football Association, MAFA. While the senior team was in the Amateurs, in 1939 a junior side was formed and entered the Federal Football League B grade competition using its original name of Camden. Toorak Park
Toorak Park is a cricket and Australian rules football arena in the Melbourne suburb of Armadale, Victoria, Australia. It is the home ground of the Prahran Football Club and Old Xaverians Football Club of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) and Prahran Cricket Club, which plays in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. The current capacity of the venue is 15,000. Toorak Park opened in 1893 when it was used by Hawksburn Cricket Club (later Prahran). The Prahran Football Club in the Victorian Football League, Victorian Football Association began home matches at the venue in 1899, and used it as its home base until it left the Association after 1994. Old Xaverians moved there for the 1995 VAFA season and now share the oval with Prahran, which now also plays in the VAFA. Robert John "Bob" Skilton (born 8 November 1938) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL). Danny Hibbert (born 16 November 1948) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Hibbert was at Collingwood for three seasons. John Ellis (footballer)
John Ellis (born 20 September 1948) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Ellis spent some time in the Essendon reserves, after coming to the club from Keilor. He made just four senior appearances in 1967 but didn't miss a game in 1968, playing all 20 home and away fixtures and three finals. In the 1968 VFL Grand Final, which Essendon lost, Ellis played as a centreman. He kicked 23 goals during 1968 season and also polled well in the Brownlow Medal, with eight votes, the second most by an Essendon player. Essendon cut Ellis from their list during the 1971 season after failing to have much of an impact in the previous three seasons. He had missed a lot of football in 1969 due to a serious knee injury and was unable to recapture the form he showed in 1968. Graham Robbins
Graham Martin Robbins (born 6 May 1949) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Robbins, who came from Catani, played at Richmond for three seasons, including their premiership year in 1969. A rover, Robbins only made three appearances that season, from rounds 12 to 14, but played nine senior games in 1970. He joined Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Oakleigh early in the 1971 season, after making one further appearance for Richmond. A member of Oakleigh's 1972 VFA premiership winning team, Robbins later played in South Australia, with the South Adelaide Football Club. He topped South Adelaide's goal-kicking in 1975 and was club captain in 1977. In the early 1980s, Robbins coached in the Latrobe Valley Football League.
