1971 San Francisco 49ers Season
The 1971 San Francisco 49ers season was the franchise's 22nd season in the National Football League and their 26th overall. The 49ers appeared in the NFC Championship Game for the second consecutive year. The team moved into a new home, Candlestick Park. After winning two of their first three games on the road the 49ers lost their first game at Candlestick Park to the Los Angeles Rams 20–13. The 49ers would rebound and win the NFC West for the second year in a row by posting a 9–5 record. However, for the second year in a row the 49ers’ season ended in disappointment with a 14–3 loss in the NFC Championship Game to the Cowboys in Dallas. NFC West
The National Football Conference - Western Division or NFC West is one of the four divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It currently has four members: the Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Rams, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Seattle Seahawks. The division was formed in 1967 as the National Football League Coastal Division, keeping with the theme of having all of the league's divisions starting with the letter "C." The division was so named because its teams were fairly close to the coasts of the United States, although they were on opposite coasts, making for long travel between division rivals. The NFL Coastal Division had four members: Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Colts, Los Angeles Rams, and San Francisco 49ers. Tim Anderson (defensive Back)
William Tim Anderson (born August 1, 1949) is a former American football defensive back in the National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL). He played for the Toronto Argonauts, San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills. He played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes. After being drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 1971 NFL Draft, Anderson was so unhappy with the 49ers' contract offer that he considered quitting football and signed with the Argonauts instead. Anderson said that "The negotiations with the 49ers go off on the wrong foot and got progressively worse." He believed that he believed he was the first NFL first round draft pick to sign with the CFL instead, and was followed by Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers in 1973 in taking that route. Center or Centre (C) is a position in gridiron football. The center is the innermost lineman of the offensive line on a football team's offense. The center is also the player who passes (or "snaps") the ball between his legs to the quarterback at the start of each play. Willie Parker (offensive Lineman)
William Nolen Parker (born December 28, 1948) is a former American football center who played for eleven seasons in the National Football League for the San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions. North Texas University Parker played college football at North Texas University. While playing at North Texas, Will made All Missouri Valley Conference in 1969 and 1970. In 2013 Will was voted as the Center for the North Texas All Century Team (1913-2013). In 2016 the North Texas Hall of Fame committee voted Will into the North Texas Hall of Fame. A running back (RB) is a member of the offensive backfield in gridiron football. The primary roles of a running back are to receive handoffs from the quarterback to rush the ball, to line up as a receiver to catch the ball, and block. There are usually one or two running backs on the field for a given play, depending on the offensive formation. Joe Orduna
Joseph Manuel Orduna (born November 6, 1948) is a former American football running back who played for the New York Giants and Baltimore Colts from 1972 to 1974. Orduna played college football for the University of Nebraska where he ran for over 100 yards 4 times. He was the Cornhusker's leading rusher in their 1970 National Championship season with 834 yards. He was the most valuable player of the 1971 Coaches All-America Game. Over his career at Nebraska he rushed for 1958 yards. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2nd round (49th pick overall) of the 1971 NFL draft but spent the 1971 season on the 49ers taxi squad due to a leg injury suffered in the final preseason game and did not play a game for them. In gridiron football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is a player who lines up between the center and the tackles on the offensive line of a football team on the line of scrimmage used primarily for blocking. Ernest Jay "Ernie" Janet (born July 22, 1949) is a former American football player, a guard in the National Football League (NFL). Early years Born in Renton, Washington, Janet attended Glacier High School in Burien, and played college football at the University of Washington in Seattle under head coach Jim Owens. On the Husky offensive line, he played alongside center Bruce Jarvis; in their senior season in 1970, the Huskies improved to 6–4 with sophomore Sonny Sixkiller at quarterback.
