1969 European Athletics Championships
The 9th European Athletics Championships were held from 16–21 September 1969 in the Karaiskaki Stadium of Athens, the capital of Greece. New at these championships were the women's 1500 metres and the women's 4×400 metres relay event. Moreover, women's 80 metres hurdles was replaced by women's 100 metres hurdles. Contemporaneous reports on the event were given in the Glasgow Herald. Former East German runner Jürgen May, who had defected, was not allowed to compete for his new country, West Germany, due to IAAF rules requiring him to live there for at least three years; he had competed for East Germany in the 1966 championships. West German officials promptly withdrew their athletes from all individual events in protest, but decided to compete in the relay races as a symbolic gesture to show their respect for the Greek organisers. The European Athletic Association (more commonly known as European Athletics) is the governing body for athletics in Europe. Frank Murphy (middle Distance Runner)
Francis "Frank" Murphy (21 May 1947 – 5 January 2017) was an Irish athlete, who specialised in middle-distance running. He earned a silver medal by finishing in second place in the 1500 metres event at the 1969 European Athletics Championships. He competed at the Summer Olympics in 1968 and 1972. He was also a 1500 m runner-up to Henryk Szordykowski Henryk Jan Szordykowski (3 June 1944 – 25 December 2022) was a retired Polish runner who specialized in the 800 metres and 1500 metres. Dieter Fromm (born 21 April 1948) is a retired East German middle-distance runner who specialized in the 800 metres. He held the indoor 800 m world record for over ten years. His career ended abruptly in 1976 when, in a race ahead of the 1976 Summer Olympics, for which Fromm was qualified, another runner tread on and damaged his achilles tendon. Stanisław Grędziński (19 October 1945 – 19 January 2022) was a Polish sprinter who specialized in the 400 metres. Career Grędziński was born in Ostrzyca, Poland, and represented the club Górnik Wałbrzych. At the 1964 European Junior Championships he won silver medals in both 400 metres and 400 metres hurdles, as well as a silver medal in the medley relay where he ran the last leg. He became Polish 400 metres champion in 1966 and 1969. He was successful at the European Championships with a gold medal in 1966 and a silver in 1969, both individually. Jean-Claude Nallet (13 March 1947 – 19 August 2023) was a French sprinter that competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics in the 400 m and 4 × 400 m relay and at the 1976 Summer Olympics in the 400 m hurdles and reached the final in the relay.
