The 1968 Fireball 300 was a NASCAR Grand National Series event that was held on May 5, 1968, at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway in Weaverville, North Carolina. Margo Hamm is a retired NASCAR Grand National Series race car owner who was a pioneer in NASCAR history because she was one of the first females to become a NASCAR race car owner. In later generations, DeLana Harvick and Teresa Earnhardt would join in her footsteps to own NASCAR racing vehicles along with a few other women that are involved in NASCAR day-to-day operation. Stan Meserve
Stan Meserve (born August 23, 1941 in Winslow, Maine) is a retired ''NASCAR Grand National'' driver who competed in one year of NASCAR racing. Career He earned a grand total $7,745 through his entire NASCAR racing career (which did not reach beyond 1968). Of the 31 races in which he participated in his career, Meserve had one top-ten finish in 4283 laps (2758.8 miles) of racing. He started and finished in 22nd place on average in his career and was a competitor at the 1968 Fireball 300. All of Meserve's races were done in a 1967 Dodge Charger vehicle. However, his later races for the Late Model Sportsman Series (which evolved into the Nationwide Series) and the Grand National North Series were done in a Chevrolet Chevelle vehicle and a Ford Granada vehicle. Petty Enterprises
Petty Enterprises (formerly Lee Petty Engineering) was a NASCAR racing team based in Level Cross, North Carolina, USA. It was founded by Lee Petty with his two sons Richard Petty and Maurice Petty. The team was later owned by Richard Petty, his son Kyle Petty and Boston Ventures. At the time of its folding the team operated the No. 43 and No. 45 Dodge Chargers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Lenard Ray Hicks (August 29, 1922 – April 20, 2003) was an Appalachian storyteller who lived his entire life on Beech Mountain, North Carolina. He was particularly known for the telling of Jack Tales. He was a recipient of a 1983 National Heritage Fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts, which is the United States government's highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. Jake Elder
J. C. "Jake" Elder (November 22, 1936 – February 24, 2010) was a NASCAR Grand National/Winston Cup Series crew chief. He was the championship crew chief for two years and for part of a third season. Elder had these successes despite never passing through third grade. Elder was known as "Suitcase Jake" because he could never settle down at one organization for long period of time, hopping from one organization to the next. Dale Inman
Dale Inman (born August 19, 1936) is a retired NASCAR Grand National/Winston Cup Series crew chief from Level Cross, Randolph County, North Carolina. He is best known for being the crew chief of Richard Petty at Petty Enterprises during three decades. They won 188 races and seven championships together (1964, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, and 1979). Inman spent most of his career working for Petty Enterprises. He also was the crew chief for Terry Labonte's 1984 championship with Hagan Racing. NASCAR.com contributor Rick Houston said that if the best crew chief was "settled on statistics and statistics alone, Dale Inman is the greatest crew chief of all time."
