1961 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1961 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 16th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. The final was held outside of Wembley and England for the first time when on the 15 September Ove Fundin retained his title in his home country of Sweden. It was the first time a rider had won three titles and Sweden produced a clean sweep of podium places with Björn Knutsson and Göte Nordin finishing second and third. Individual Speedway World Championship
The World Championship of Speedway is an international competition between the highest-ranked motorcycle speedway riders of the world, run under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The first official championships were held in 1936. Today, this official FIM championship is organised as a series of Speedway Grand Prix events, where points are awarded according to performance in the event and tallied up at the end of each season. However, up to 1994, it was run as a single-night event after qualifying rounds during the season, leading up to a big final of 20 heats, where points were awarded according to riders' heat placings and then tallied up at the end. Harry Bastable
Harry Bastable is a former international motorcycle speedway rider and promoter. Career summary Harry Bastable's was a novice at the Alan Hunt 1949 winter training school when he was signed up by Cradley Heath Heathens. For experience he was loaned to the 3rd Division National League Tamworth Hounds speedway club for the 1950 season, with occasional rides at reserve for 2nd Division Cradley. He returned full-time to Cradley Heath in 1951 and in 1952 was the Heathens' top scorer. Following the closure of speedway at Dudley Wood at the end of 1952 the Cradley team amalgamated with 3rd Division neighbours Wolverhampton Wasps to operate in the National League 2nd Division in 1953, but Harry Bastable never liked the track and didn't show his Cradley form, moving to Birmingham Brummies in August of that year where First Division racing proved hard going. Cradley Heath
Cradley Heath is a town in the Rowley Regis area of the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, West Midlands, England approximately north-west of Halesowen, south of Dudley and west of central Birmingham. Cradley Heath is often confused with the neighbouring Halesowen district of Cradley, although the two places are separated by the River Stour and have long been in separate local authorities, and until 1966 were in separate counties. Doug Templeton
Douglas Templeton (18 June 1928 – 21 December 2019) was a motorcycle speedway rider from Scotland. Career Doug Templeton began racing for Glasgow White City Tigers during the 1953 Speedway National League Division Two season. The following year he joined the Lanarkshire Eagles (based in Motherwell) but the team disbanded after the 1954 season. He rode a couple of matches for Ipswich Witches in 1956 before missing the 1957 season. Doug and his brother Willie Templeton then raced during the 1958 season in a series of challenge matches for Lanarkshire Eagles. The pair raced grass track during 1959, before joining Edinburgh Monarchs for the new 1960 Provincial Speedway League. The pair spent five seasons together with Edinburgh from 1960 to 1965 before Willie finally separated from his brother by joining Glasgow Tigers during the 1965 British League season.
