1957 VFL Grand Final
The 1957 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 21 September 1957. It was the 60th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1957 VFL season. The match, attended by 100,324 spectators, was won by Melbourne by 61 points, marking that club's ninth premiership victory. This was Melbourne's fourth successive Grand Final appearance and third successive premiership. Ron Barassi starred for the Demons with five goals, four of them in the first half to put the game out of Essendon's reach. Keith Carroll
Keith Carroll (25 March 1930 – 23 September 2022) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1950s. Debuting in 1952 from the Romsey Football Club, Carroll was a half back flanker and occasional full back who never cemented his spot in the Melbourne side until the 1956 season. Peter Brenchley
Peter Brenchley (23 October 1936 – 23 April 1991) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s. Despite managing only 29 games of league football, Brenchley played in two premiership sides. In each of his three seasons he appeared in a Grand Final, winning flags in 1957 and 1959. Such was Melbourne's strength in this era that Brenchley finished on a losing team in only four games. After leaving Melbourne, Brenchley moved to South Australia and played with Norwood in the South Australian National Football League during 1960 and 1961. He then returned to Victoria and played with Waverley in the Victorian Football Association for five seasons, where he won a premiership in 1965. Ian Thorogood
Ian Thorogood (25 August 1936 – 19 March 2019) was an Australian rules footballer who played and coached in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Biography Thorogood played for Melbourne, including three premiership teams. Athol Webb
Athol Webb (born 13 September 1935) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s. A small forward, Webb was a premiership player with Melbourne in 1956 and 1957. He kicked five goals in the 1956 VFL grand final win and topped their goalkicking in their 1957 VFL premiership season with 56 goals. Geoff Tunbridge
Geoff R. Tunbridge (7 April 1932 – 23 March 2015) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). At the age of 25, Tunbridge was recruited to Melbourne from Ballarat, where he was an Old Boy (from 1949) and teacher at Ballarat Church of England Boys Grammar School.
