1952 VFA Season
The 1952 Victorian Football Association season was the 71st season of the Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Oakleigh Football Club, after it defeated Port Melbourne by 21 points in the Grand Final on 4 October. It was Oakleigh's fourth VFA premiership. Premiership The home-and-home season was played over twenty matches, before the top four clubs contested a finals series under the Page–McIntyre system to determine the premiers for the season. Ladder Finals Awards * The leading goalkicker for the season was Johnny Walker ( Williamstown), who kicked 103 goals in the home-and-home season and did not participate in finals. * The J. J. Liston Trophy was won by Frank Johnson ( Port Melbourne), who polled 47 votes. Oakleigh Football Club
Oakleigh Football Club, nicknamed the Devils, was an Australian rules football club from Oakleigh which played in the VFA from 1929 until 1994. Oakleigh wore purple guernseys with a gold monogram thus giving them their original nickname the Purple and Golds. History The club was formed in 1891 and after having success in the Melbourne Districts Association (premierships in 1907, 1924, & 1928), they were one of two teams admitted into the VFA in 1929, the other being Sandringham. With former Essendon star player and coach, and future Fitzroy and Carlton coach Frank Maher in charge they won a premiership in just their second season with a 9-point win over Northcote in a very spiteful game, 9.6 (60) to 7.9 (51). Sandringham Football Club
The Sandringham Football Club, nicknamed The Zebras, is an Australian rules football club based in Melbourne which was formed in 1929 and plays in the Victorian Football League (VFL) which was formerly called the Victorian Football Association (VFA). History The Sandringham Football Club was admitted to the VFA competition (now VFL) for the 1929 season, though the first moves to establish a semi-professional football team from the Sandringham region began two years earlier. The club was formed in that time as a three-way merge of the existing amateur clubs in the area, Sandringham Amateurs, Black Rock FC and Hampton Amateurs. The club colours of gold, black and blue were taken from those three local teams respectively. Supreme Court Of Victoria
The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in the Australian state of Victoria. Founded in 1852, it is a superior court of common law and equity, with unlimited and inherent jurisdiction within the state. The Supreme Court comprises two divisions: the Trial Division, which oversees its original jurisdiction, and the Court of Appeal, which deals with its appellate jurisdiction, and is frequently referred to as a court in its own right. Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League
The Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (abbreviated "MPNFL") is an Australian rules football competition, governed by the AFL South East. The MPNFL contains teams near the south eastern region of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. At the end of the 2017 season, the competition was restructured from a geographical to a divisional structure, with promotion/ relegation. It contains two divisions with 22 teams in all, 10 in Division 1 and 12 in Division 2. History The league was formed in 1987 upon the merger of the Mornington Peninsula FL and the Nepean FL. Football on the Peninsula region goes back to 1908, and in 2008 celebrated its centenary. The first league, the Peninsula FA, was formed in 1908. Eric Guy
Eric Arthur Guy (18 August 1932 – 3 May 1991) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the VFL. Family The youngest of the nine children of Willie Guy (1886-1946), and Ruby May Guy (1889-1960), née Sawyer, Eric Arthur Guy was born on 18 August 1932. His older brother, Wally Guy, played VFL football for the North Melbourne Football Club, and his nephew, Gary Guy played VFL football for the North Melbourne Football Club. Bill Morris (Australian Rules Footballer)
James William McLaren Morris (24 April 192125 May 1960) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL), mostly during the 1940s. He played much of his football beside Jack Dyer as a knock ruckman. Career Morris started his career with the Melbourne reserve team but before he could make an impression he decided to join the army. He returned to football in 1942 and was traded to Richmond and made his senior debut that year. In 1945 he won the first of his three Best and Fairest awards, the others coming in 1948 and 1950. Morris won the Brownlow Medal for the best player in the VFL in 1948, joining Stan Judkins as the only Richmond players to win the Medal to that time. He polled well in other Brownlow Medal nights, finishing equal second in 1946 and equal third in 1950. Jim Bohan
James Joseph Vincent Bohan (21 July 1919 – 13 October 1967) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn in the VFL. He played in the centre or at centre half forward. Bohan captained Hawthorn in 1944 and 1946 and despite playing with the club for almost a decade, he never once appeared in a finals match. He won Hawthorn's 'Best and Fairest' award in 1943 and 1945. In a match against Vehicle Park in Albury in September 1945, Bohun kicked 20 goals. Frank Johnson (footballer, Born 1932)
Francis Charles "Frank" Johnson (3 July 1932 – 9 July 2016) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the South Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Port Melbourne in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Career A 185 cm ruckman, Johnson began his senior career playing with Port Melbourne in the VFA in the 1950s. He won a record five best and fairest awards at Port Melbourne, in an era where the team reached eight consecutive grand finals (winning only once). He won the J. J. Liston Trophy for his efforts during the 1952 season and twice earned All-Australian selection: the first time was in the 1953 Adelaide Carnival where he was named in what was the inaugural All-Australian team, and he was selected as captain in the 1956 Perth Carnival team. George Caris
George Caris (8 June 1927 – 10 October 2013) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). South Melbourne Caris came to South Melbourne from Olympic, a club in the local Sunday Amateur competition. Used as a ruck-rover, Caris made 15 appearances for South Melbourne in the 1948 VFL season and earned a Brownlow Medal vote while playing on Norm Smith, but only managed to play three senior games in 1949. He played his first game of the 1950 season in round four, against Fitzroy, during which he was reported for "kicking" opponent Jack Gaffney. Bob Bonnett
Robert "Bob" Bonnett (1933 – 11 May 2018) was an Australian rules footballer who played with the Port Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League, Victorian Football Association (VFA) in the 1950s and 1960s. A full-forward from the Port Melbourne area, Bonnett attracted the attention of senior recruiters while playing for the Melbourne Sunday Amateur Football League in 1950, with both Sydney Swans, South Melbourne (Australian Football League, VFL) and South Launceston Football Club#City/City-South, City (Northern Tasmanian Football Association (1886–1986), NTFA) interested in securing his services; but in 1951, at the age of 18, he began playing with Port Melbourne in the VFA.
