1943 VFL Grand Final
The 1943 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Richmond Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Princes Park in Melbourne on 25 September 1943. It was the 45th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1943 VFL season. The match, attended by 42,100 spectators, was won by Richmond by a margin of 5 points, marking that club's fifth VFL premiership victory. Bob Bawden
Robert Harvey Bawden (28 February 1917 – 22 July 1980) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1940s. Bawden originally played with Leongatha Imperials Football Club and was a member of their 1932 and Leongatha FC's 1934 and 1935 premiership teams. In 1935, Bawden played 16 games with Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Oakleigh. He returned to Morwell and played in their premiership and won the 1937 Rodda Memorial Gold Medal in the Central Gippsland Football Association before joining Richmond in 1939. Over the course of his career there Bawden acted as second ruckman to Richmond great Jack Dyer. When not rucking he was used in the forward pocket and was a member of Richmond's 1943 VFL premiership team. Leo Merrett
Leo Frederick Merrett (5 April 1920 – 18 October 1976) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the VFL in between 1940 and 1949 for the Richmond Football Club. Family The son of Frederick Merrett, and Ellen Clarice Merrett, née Buckley, Leo Frederick Merrett was born at Nhill, Victoria, on 5 April 1920. He married Sheila Nora Etheridge on 22 April 1944. His brother-in-law was the Richmond footballer Dave Baxter. He is the great grandfather of Western Bulldogs player Bailey Smith. Football Merrett was a member of Richmond's 1943 VFL Grand Final victory against Essendon. In November 1946, Merrett was appointed as the captain / coach of the Border United Football Club. In January, 1947, it was announced that Richmond Football Club refused Merrett a clearance to coach the Border United Football Club. Len Ablett
Leonard George Ablett (10 May 1916 – 19 December 2006) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the VFL during the early 1940s. Ablett joined Richmond from the Victorian town of Myrtleford. He came off the bench as a reserve in Richmond's 1943 premiership side, his last game in the VFL. Ablett returned to Myrtleford and was the club's best-and-fairest player in its inaugural Ovens and Murray Football League season in 1950. The pavilion at Myrtleford's home ground of McNamara Reserve was named after him in 1974. He was the club's first life member and served 20 years as president. Ablett also served as a councillor and president with the Shire of Myrtleford. Ablett was the uncle of mercurial VFL/AFL footballer Gary Ablett, Sr. and helped recruit him to Myrtleford for one season in 1983. Laurie Cahill
Laurie Cahill (22 September 1912 – 6 December 1974) was an Australian rules footballer who played for South Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Career Cahill, the uncle of coaching great John, played as both a rover and wingman during his career. A premiership player in 1935 and 1938, he won South Adelaide's 'best and fairest' in the second of those years as well as in 1939. While in Melbourne in 1943, Cahill made seven appearances for Richmond. Jack Dyer
John Raymond Dyer Sr. OAM (15 November 1913 – 23 August 2003), nicknamed Captain Blood, was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1931 and 1949. One of the game's most prominent players, he was one of 12 inaugural "Legends" inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Dick Harris (Australian Rules Footballer)
Richard Dennis Harris (21 October 1911 – 30 September 1993) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1934 and 1944 for the Richmond Football Club. Harris played mainly as a rover and was highly successful in front of goals. He also represented Victoria at interstate football, playing a total of nine games for his state including the 1937 Perth Carnival. Early life Born and raised in Warrnambool, he started his playing career with Victoria Ward in the Warrnambool Junior FA in 1927. His father had told him he would get a shilling for every goal he kicked. His first game he kicked seven goals. Max Oppy
William Maxwell Oppy (14 October 1924 – 25 November 2008) was an Australian rules football player who played in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1942 and 1954 for the Richmond Football Club. He was senior coach of Richmond in 1956. Family The son of James Thomas Oppy (1893–1935) and Doris Edna Oppy, née Watson (1895–1967), William Maxwell Oppy, known as "Max", was born on 14 October 1924. He was the brother of Jim Oppy and cousin of Dick Reynolds, Tom Reynolds (footballer), Tom Reynolds, and murdered lawyer Keith William Allan. Football Oppy, who was recruited from Kew, started his career as a rover at Richmond and played in their 1943 premiership side. Bernie Waldron
Bernie Waldron (20 March 1920 – 20 December 1990) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1940s. Waldron appeared in ten finals with Richmond, four of them Grand Finals. A premiership player at Richmond in 1943, he was a Grand Final runner-up in 1940, 1942 and 1944. Waldron played a variety of positions in his career, but was used mostly as a centreman, half back flanker or on the half forward flank. In the 1941 VFL season he was involved in a collision which broke the leg of Carlton's Jack Hale and forced the rover to retire. After leaving Richmond he played at Hobart and was a member of their 1950 premiership team, kicking an important behind in the dying seconds to break the deadlock.
