Len Ablett
Leonard George Ablett (10 May 1916 – 19 December 2006) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the VFL during the early 1940s. Ablett joined Richmond from the Victorian town of Myrtleford. He came off the bench as a reserve in Richmond's 1943 premiership side, his last game in the VFL. Ablett returned to Myrtleford and was the club's best-and-fairest player in its inaugural Ovens and Murray Football League season in 1950. The pavilion at Myrtleford's home ground of McNamara Reserve was named after him in 1974. He was the club's first life member and served 20 years as president. Ablett also served as a councillor and president with the Shire of Myrtleford. Ablett was the uncle of mercurial VFL/AFL footballer Gary Ablett, Sr. and helped recruit him to Myrtleford for one season in 1983. Gary Ablett, Sr
Gary Ablett Sr. (born 1 October 1961), is a former professional Australian rules footballer who represented and in the Australian Football League (AFL). Nicknamed "God", Ablett is widely regarded as one of Australian football's greatest players, and was especially renowned for his high-flying spectacular marks and his prolific goalkicking. After playing for several country teams in and around his hometown of Drouin, Victoria, Ablett was recruited by Hawthorn and made his Victorian Football League (VFL) debut in 1982. However, he struggled to adjust to city life and retreated to Myrtleford the following year. The Ablett family is one of the most prominent in Australian rules football, with many members playing in the Victorian Football League/Australian Football League. Family members FRED ABLETT – The first family member with the surname Ablett to play Australian Rules Football was Frederick (Fred) William Ablett (born in 1883), he played 56 games in the WAFL from 1906–1910. He played for North Fremantle from 1906–1908, Midland Junction in 1909, and then returned to North Fremantle in 1910. ALF WILLIAMSON – Alf Williamson was the first VFL/AFL player related to the family. He played 11 games for Carlton from 1912 to 1914, and 8 games for Melbourne in 1914. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It includes teams from clubs based in the eastern states of Australia: Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and includes reserves teams for the east coast AFL clubs. The league evolved from the former Victorian Football Association (VFA), and it has been known by its current name since 1996. Wangaratta ( ) is a city in the northeast of Victoria, Australia, from Melbourne along the Hume Highway. The city had an estimated urban population of 19,318 at June 2018. The Shire of Myrtleford was a local government area about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1960 until 1994.
