1923 South American Championship
The seventh edition of the South American Championship was held in Montevideo, Uruguay from 29 October to 2 December 1923. Overview The participating countries were Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Chile withdrew for the second time since the tournament was created. The tournament was also used as a qualifier for the 1924 Summer Olympics. Vicente Aguirre
Vicente Aguirre was Argentine footballer, (January 22, 1901 - June 11, 1990), prominent in the history of Club Atlético Central Córdoba and Newell's Old Boys who also made four appearances for the Argentina national team in 1923-24. Club career In 1916, when he was fifteen years old, he started playing football in the lower divisions of Rosario Central. First he joined the team of the fourth division and then, in 1917, played in the team which won the third division tournament. In the final match that season, Aguirre scored two goals in the extra time that gave the team a 3:1 victory against Gimnasia y Esgrima. In 1918, Aguirre transferred to Central Córdoba. He won the Rosarina Football Association championships with Central Córdoba and once in Newell's Old Boys. With the Charrúas he won the 1931 Preparation Tournament and the Governor Luciano Molinas Tournament in 1932, the first 2 official titles in the history of the club. José Cea
José Pedro Cea (1 September 1900 – 18 September 1970) was a Uruguayan football player as a striker and coach. Playing career Club career Cea was born in MontevideoMontevideo. At club level, he played for Nacional, where he won several Uruguayan championships. International career Cea made his debut for Uruguay in November 1923. He was part of Uruguay's championship-winning team at the 1923 South American Championship. In 1924 Cea again won a continental championship as Uruguay won their fifth title at the 1924 tournament. Cea won gold medals at both the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics. He was Uruguay's leading goalscorer in the 1930 FIFA World Cup. He scored the crucial equalising goal in the World Cup final against Argentina, levelling the score to 2–2 in the 57th minute; Uruguay went on to win 4–2. Cesáreo Onzari
Cesáreo Onzari (February, 1903 – January, 1964) was an Argentine footballer who played as a left winger. He made his entire career in Huracán, playing from 1921 until his retirement in 1933. He was the first footballer known to have scored directly on a corner kick without an assist in professional play. Biography Onzari started his career playing for clubs Sportivo Boedo and Mitre. In 1921 he made his debut at Huracán, where he played as a left winger. Although Onzari made a successful career in football, his peak of popularity was on October 2, 1924, during a friendly match between Argentina and Uruguay national teams, played at Estadio Sportivo Barracas. When only 15 minutes had been played, Onzari made a goal from a corner kick, with no other player touching the ball before scoring.
