1914 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1914 municipal election was held December 14, 1914 to elect a mayor and six aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council and three trustees to sit on each of the public and separate school boards. There were ten aldermen on city council, but four of the positions were already filled: Joseph Clarke, Rice Sheppard, J. A. Kinney, and Robert Douglas were all elected to two-year terms in 1913 and were still in office. Alexander Campbell had also been elected to a two-year term, but had resigned. Accordingly, the fifth-place finisher from the north side of the North Saskatchewan River - W C Mcarthur - was elected to a one-year term to replace Campbell. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. Joseph Adair
Joseph Woods Adair (1877 – November 1, 1960) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, a municipal councillor in Edmonton, and a candidate for election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Biography Joseph Adair was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1877. He apprenticed as a printer in Glasgow and came to Canada in 1899. He worked for newspapers in Toronto and Winnipeg before settling in Edmonton in 1906 to work for Frank Oliver's Edmonton Bulletin. He founded his own linotyping business in 1911, which he would operate until his retirement in 1946. He also produced a throwaway sheet called Town Topics. In 1914, he ran for mayor but was defeated handily by William Thomas Henry. Joseph Gariépy
Joseph Hormidas Gariépy (December 3, 1852 – July 6, 1927) was a politician in Alberta, Canada and a municipal councillor in Edmonton. Biography Gariépy was born in L'Assomption County, Canada East on December 3, 1852. At age sixteen, he moved to Montreal where he lived for twenty-four years, working in the grocery business. He married Etudienne Boissoneault in 1872. The pair would have seven children; two of these, Wilfred and Charles, would enter politics themselves. In 1893 Joseph Gariépy moved to Edmonton bought a block of land for $1200 - the most expensive real estate traded in Edmonton to that date. On it, he opened a general store known successively as Gariépy & Chenier, Gariépy & Borsseau, and Gariépy & Lessard; a second store in Morinville followed in 1908. Charles Gibbs (Alberta Politician)
Charles Lionel Gibbs (November 11, 1877 – September 5, 1934) was a politician in Alberta, Canada. He served as a municipal councillor in Edmonton from 1924 until his death and, concurrently, a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1926 until his death. Early life Gibbs was born November 11, 1877, in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales and was educated at Surrey and Oxford, training as an architect. He emigrated to Canada in 1907, and established an architecture firm in Edmonton, Barnes and Gibbs, that same year. He also taught at the Edmonton Technical High School, and chaired the city's Parks Commission in 1912. Charles Gowan
Charles Gowan (February 6, 1850 – July 3, 1938) was an American and Canadian pioneer and politician. He served as mayor of Antigo, Wisconsin and as a municipal councillor in Edmonton, Alberta. Biography Charles Gowan was born in New York and migrated to Wisconsin early in life. James East
James East (October 7, 1871 – June 23, 1940) was a politician and labour activist in Alberta, Canada. He was for a time and the longest-serving alderman in Edmonton's history, and was a defeated candidate at the provincial and federal levels. He was also an ardent monetary reformer. Early life East was born in Bolton, Ontario on October 7, 1871. At the age of thirteen, he began to work in sawmills and farms. He took up prospecting and travelled the English-speaking world at it, going from South Dakota (in the Black Hills region) to New Mexico and Colorado, and then spending time in New Zealand and Australia. Joseph Driscoll (Canadian Politician)
Daniel Joseph Driscoll (June 11, 1876 – January 2, 1942) was a Canadian politician and a municipal councillor in Edmonton, Alberta. Early life Driscoll was born on June 11, 1876, in Arthur, Ontario to Daniel Driscoll and Bridget Roach, a New Brunswicker of Irish descent. After being educated in Arthur, he served as a court clerk before coming to Edmonton in 1906. There he opened the Joe Driscoll Sporting Goods Company and became prominent in the city's sporting community. He married Emma Johnson on August 11, 1908. The pair had three sons and five daughters. James "Merchant Prince" Ramsey (April 4, 1864 – December 23, 1939) was a provincial politician and business man from Alberta, Canada. Early life Ramsey was born in 1864 in Imlay City, Michigan. He was raised in Plattsville, Ontario. He began his career working as a merchandiser in his home town. He ended up traveling all over eastern North America eventually apprenticing under his father at his retail store in Guelph, Ontario. He moved west to Edmonton in 1910 and founded his own department store. Business career Ramsey founded and owned a popular department store in Edmonton titled ''James Ramsey Ltd.'' William Thomas Henry
William Thomas Henry (January 2, 1871 – March 12, 1952) was a politician, real estate agent and businessman in Alberta, Canada. He served numerous years on Edmonton City Council as an Alderman from 1900 to 1902 and later as mayor from 1914 to 1917. He also served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1924 to 1926 sitting with the Liberal caucus. Early life Henry was born in Prince Edward Island January 2, 1872. Joseph Clarke (Canadian Politician)
Joseph Andrew Clarke (September 20, 1869 – July 27, 1941) was a Canadian politician and lawyer. He served twice as mayor of Edmonton, Alberta, was a candidate for election to the House of Commons of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, and was a member of the Yukon Territorial Council (precursor to the Yukon Legislative Assembly). Early life Clarke was born in Osnabruck Center, Ontario. He was educated in Prescott and Brockville, Ontario, and joined the North-West Mounted Police in 1892 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He returned to Ontario shortly thereafter, only to be charged by the RNWMP with desertion. He was fined one hundred dollars, but received no further sanction in part because the magistrate was his uncle.
