1911 VFL Grand Final
The 1911 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Essendon Football Club and Collingwood Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 23 September 1911. It was the 14th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1911 VFL season. The match, attended by 43,905 spectators, was won by Essendon by a margin of 6 points, marking that club's second premiership victory. Right to challenge This season was played under the amended ''Argus'' system. Essendon was the minor premier, and Collingwood had finished fourth. The teams both qualified for this match by winning their semi-finals matches. If Collingwood had won this match, Essendon would have had the right to challenge Collingwood to a rematch for the premiership on the following weekend, because Essendon was the minor premier. Bill Busbridge
William Ethelbert Busbridge (31 January 1885 – 12 June 1943) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the early days of the Victorian Football League (VFL). A centre half back and part-time ruckman, he was also known by his nickname "Buzzy". Family One of seven children (one of whom was Norm Busbridge), Busbridge was born to William Ethebert Busbridge (1861–1937) and Margaret Jane Busbridge (1870–1895), née Smith, in the Essendon district on 31 January 1885. He married Ethel Essendon Dean (1888–1971) on 14 December 1912. They had one surviving son, Keith Ethelbert (1917–1985). Busbridge died in a Geelong private hospital on 12 June 1943, and was cremated at Fawkner Crematorium on 14 June 1943. Ernest James "Ginger" Cameron (20 February 1888 – 16 December 1946) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). George McLeod (footballer, Born 1879)
George McLeod (22 August 1879 – 3 March 1959) was an Australian rules footballer who played for St Kilda and Essendon during the early years of the Victorian Football League (VFL). McLeod, originally from South Yarra, started his VFL career at St Kilda in 1897. He left the club at the end of the season but returned for another stint in 1901. Before arriving at Essendon in 1910, McLeod played football for the Railway club (Lyell District Football Association) in Tasmania. He represented the state at the 1908 Melbourne Carnival and that year also won the LDFA "best all round player" award. Fred Baring
Frederick Albert Baring (15 December 1890 – 10 December 1961) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1900s. In 1997 he was named at fullback in Essendon's official Team of the Century. He also played first-class cricket for Victoria. David Bertram Miller Smith (14 September 188429 July 1963) was an Australian sportsman. Jack Kirby (Australian Footballer)
John James Kirby (1 July 1889 – 11 March 1939) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Kirby was a small forward and is the earliest known player to have kicked a goal with his first kick in the VFL, scored in 1911; this achievement would not be made again for nine years, when Gordon Coventry, an AFL Legend of the Australian Football Hall of Fame replicated the feat in 1920. Kirby had a good start to his career from a team point of view as well, not experiencing a loss until his 15th game. Percy Ogden
Percival Gordon Ogden (24 February 1886 – 13 July 1967) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A rover, Ogden started his career with Collingwood in 1905. He played just four games with the club before moving to Association team Preston and did not return to the VFL until 1910 with Essendon. Ogden was a member of Essendon's back-to-back premiership wins in 1911 and 1912. After Essendon disbanded during the Great War, Ogden was captain-coach of Preston (then in junior ranks) in 1916–17 before returning when Essendon resumed in 1918. He spent 1919 as captain and the following two were as captain-coach. Ogden effectively retired from League ranks and was captain-coach of Northcote (where he lived) in 1922. Patrick Augustus Shea (16 March 1886 – 29 May 1954) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL), and also a first-class cricketer with Victoria. Fred O'Shea
Thomas Frederick O'Shea (5 October 1886 – 26 December 1962) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
