George McLeod (footballer, Born 1879)
George McLeod (22 August 1879 – 3 March 1959) was an Australian rules footballer who played for St Kilda and Essendon during the early years of the Victorian Football League (VFL). McLeod, originally from South Yarra, started his VFL career at St Kilda in 1897. He left the club at the end of the season but returned for another stint in 1901. Before arriving at Essendon in 1910, McLeod played football for the Railway club (Lyell District Football Association) in Tasmania. He represented the state at the 1908 Melbourne Carnival and that year also won the LDFA "best all round player" award. In the sport of Australian rules football, each of the eighteen players in a team is assigned to a particular named position on the field of play. These positions describe both the player's main role and by implication their location on the ground. As the game has evolved, tactics and team formations have changed, and the names of the positions and the duties involved have evolved too. There are 18 positions in Australian rules football, not including four (sometimes 6–8) interchange players who may replace another player on the ground at any time during play. The fluid nature of the modern game means the positions in football are not as formally defined as in sports such as rugby or American football. Allan Belcher
Allan Belcher (2 December 1884 – 2 July 1921) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was the brother of South Melbourne player Vic Belcher. Belcher started his career with Collingwood but it was with Essendon that he established himself as one of the premier ruckmen in the league. Known as "King Belcher" formed a combination in the ruck with Fred Baring and Ernie Cameron, culminating in premiership success in 1912. He was captain-coach of Essendon in 1910 and represented Victoria at interstate football in patches during his career. 1897 VFL Season
The 1897 VFL season was the inaugural season of the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL), the new highest-level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured eight clubs, ran from 8 May until 4 September, and comprised a 14-game home-and-away season followed by a 1897 VFL finals series, finals series featuring the top four clubs. The new league was established when eight clubs from the Victorian Football Association – , , , , , , and – seceded at the end of 1896 VFA season, 1896. The ''Zeehan and Dundas Herald'' (also seen as ''Zeehan Dundas Herald'') was a newspaper for the West Coast Tasmania community, based in Zeehan and Dundas from 1890 to 1922. It was published by William Lawrence Calder and Joseph Bowden, with the National Library of Australia catalogue stating that the first issues was dated Tuesday, 14 October 1890 while Blainey in The Peaks of Lyell has October 1891. Some notable people worked on the staff during the life of the newspaper; David John O'Keefe was editor between 1894 and 1899. The technology acquired for the printing of the newspaper was, during publication, up to date and unique in being located outside of the main Hobart – Launceston city environments.
